Missouri Republican tries to block minimum wage hike because pay 'wasn't meant to be a living wage'

A Missouri Republican introduced legislation that would stop Kansas City from enacting a higher minimum wage — because he said workers weren’t meant to live on those wages.

Rep. Dan Shaul (R-Jefferson City) wants the statehouse to quickly pass his bill that would prohibit cities and counties from paying a higher minimum wage than what is set by state law, reported the Kansas City Star.

The bill contains an emergency clause that would allow it to go into effect as soon as the governor signs it, and the newspaper reported Shaul’s bill is moving quickly through the legislative process.

“The minimum wage wasn’t meant to be a living wage,” Shaul told the Star. “I’m all for family sustainable wages, and I certainly don’t want a family to have to work two or three jobs to get by. But grocery store baggers and fast food work isn’t where you should be working to sustain your family.”

What if they're the only jobs available, you want them to sit home and let the kids starve? What an ass.

Objection: Raising the minimum wage will hurt business and reduce employment.

“No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.” (1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act)

Objection: $10.10 an hour is too much, maybe $9.

“By living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level — I mean the wages of a decent living.” (1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act)

The Democratic Party of Missouri should be working on this ad and putting it on the shelf for later use. Whoever runs against him should have perfected an effective talking point by then.

not a living wage. Pukes like this don't care if people eat, have a roof over their heads or have health care. They would throw them out on the street and then order the local gestapo to shoot them for rooting through a dumpster. They want them dead and gone!

I actually do get that places like McDonald's thought they'd be providing after-school jobs to kids rather than having fulltime workers who needed to support families, and the fact that that's changed isn't the fault of the fast-food companies. However, the decline in non-service jobs since the Reagan days has alter things. If the representative wants to introduce additional legislation to undo some of the harm done to workers since the 1980s, then he can have his minimum wage argument. Otherwise, forget it.

and your nearby supermarket to see how many of them have children to raise. Find out how many of them ARE going to school AND working to improve their lot in life. See how great they are living ....you know, in the lap of luxury, driving great cars and having an enviable standard of living. Better yet, switch places with them for a month or two. (Forget exchanging jobs for a day. You need a fairly long time in that life to get the gist of things.) Oh, and be sure you only live on the wages you make at that fast food job.

These fools have no idea what they are talking about. Not a clue.

If there's a minimum wage so people can learn to work and be trained to be good employees, then employers should be allowed to hire only teenagers. Let them deal with unreliable people who might be working their first jobs.

Now, the GOP wants to have its cake and eat it too-- pay minimum wage but get older employees who might be more reliable and teachable.

(where I live) and I'm sure a lot of the rest of the RED states. People actually believe that the minimum wage was created for teens and part timers who don't "need" a living wage job, just pocket money. Morons.

Lived in MO several years, you have my sympathy, for lack of a better word. Someone once told me that if the southern third of Missouri were annexed to Arkansas, it would double the average IQ of both states. The more you think about the math, the nastier it gets. Have a laugh at the expense of your neighbors and hang in there!

Totally disconnected from the human race, and from any sense of reality.

It takes total idiots to elect them, people who don't read, can't read, and watch a lot of Fox TV, thinking it is actually true.

$35,915 a year,plus.....

Missouri lawmakers among best paid part-time officials in the nation

ST. LOUIS — How does nearly $36,000 a year with full health benefits sound for a job that technically lasts about half a year?

Like the idea? Then run for the Missouri General Assembly at your next available opportunity.

An examination of the pay and perks for Missouri’s lawmakers shows their part-time gig is pretty sweet, if not out of line with those in other states.

The exact pay for Missouri legislators is $35,915 per year plus a $104 a day per diem for miscellaneous costs such as food and lodging. The daily per diem is determined by roll call, so your area’s lawmakers won’t earn their lunch if playing hooky.
