Undocumented Dad Taken by ICE While Dropping Kids Off At School

Source: ABC 7 Chicago

LOS ANGELES -- While being dropped off at school with her sisters, 13-year-old Fatima Avelica recorded her undocumented father being picked up by agents with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Romulo Avelica-Gonzalez had been in the country for 20 years with four children, two of which are grown.

The ICE officials, who wore police jackets, took the 48-year-old father into custody as he dropped his girls off at school in Highland Park on Tuesday.

"It's really hard what we're going through," Avelica-Gonzalez's daughter Brenda Avelica said. "I never thought we'd actually go through something like this. It's terrible to feel and see your family being broken apart."

who have been on a list for a number years to be picked up for being here illegally but prior administrations were reluctant to force the issue and let it slide for most of the people here illegally.
Is this right for Trump to do though? No, but it is not illegal to enforce the law.

including blaming the illegal immigrants for the job problems in this country which is bullshit as picking farm produce and other such jobs people here illegally tend to take pays dirt regardless who is doing the job.

There's a huge difference between what happened to the Jews in their own country and removing undocumented immigrants.

Please stop comparing everything to the Holocaust.

It is sad for this family, but it isn't comparable.

as an excuse over why the German economy was in the toilet but the fact is none of them were to blame for that just like the immigrants here are not to blame for things like coal miners being out of work.

Demonizing and degrading groups of people to where the citizens of the country don't view them as people anymore.

This is similar to what Hitler did in the beginning of his rise.

Blame a particular group for all of our problems, turn the citizenry against them.

It'd be one thing if Trump was just enforcing the law, it is another when you look at the rhetoric from his supporters and look at how Trump blames them for problems.

My heart breaks with hers.

We have some very good friends who originally were undocumented in our country. We didn't/don't ask questions. Every one of them is productive and contributes to our society. At least one attained citizenship a couple of years ago and we were invited to a wonderful party at his home to celebrate. What a relief for him that he no longer has to worry (hopefully). I can't even imagine what is going through the minds of some who aren't legal. And now they really can't even take the steps to become legal.

Most Hispanic families are hardworking, intact, church attending Catholics, and supportive of each other. They look after each other.

I know this is a generalization, but I do personally see that to be so.--most.

Whereas, we have trump and many rich and powerful people who just never pay taxes and parade around off the backs of those who truly work,

Dang my heart is breaking over this video..

And I don't understand why you would deport someone 10 years later over a DUI.

But I do think he should have been deported 10 years ago.

DUI's are 100% avoidable. It involves no luck and no money. Don't drink and drive. It's a ridiculously simple rule to follow. Lots of people do it anyway, and if you do get a DUI, you accept that you are going to lose your license. If you are in the US illegally, you should accept that getting a DUI will get you deported. If you are a US citizen and have a DUI, you aren't even eligible to enter Canada on a tourist visa without a waiver. If I was arrested in any other country for DUI, I'd fully expect to be deported even if I was there legally.

This guy could have completely avoided this situation by deciding not to drink and drive.

The video is tragic. I absolutely feel for the family that's being torn apart here, but I also feel for families that are torn apart by drunk drivers.

For those who feel this is harsh, what is the actual number of DUI's that we should tolerate before deporting someone?

I'd also point out that statistically, people have to do a lot of drunk driving to get a DUI (though I'm open to the unlikely possibility that in this particular case, he was driving at .08 and it was the very first time he'd ever done it).

But don't expect too many others to agree.

Driving while under the influence is a totally avoidable crime.

It's a shame it didn't happen ten years ago, because now this is just really sad all around. I feel for those kids.

It's a ridiculously simple rule to follow.

No, it's not if you're a drug addict. You've got to have your drug. Alcohol is a drug.

Not arguing about the rest.

Edited to acknowledge counter: "He didn't have to get into a car." Well.....that's correct, but very few alcoholics don't drink and drive. Arguing that it's a choice is largely disingenuous.

He's been here for 25 years, got married, had kids... whom are citizens by birth, and he would be immediately be eligible for a green card. then wait 5 more years, to apply. that would've been one more vote against trump.
