'It's heartbreaking': Maltese mourn collapse of Azure Window arch

Source: The Guardian

As arches go, the Azure Window had celebrity status, featuring in films such as Clash of the Titans and The Count of Monte Cristo and serving as the backdrop to the Dothraki wedding scene in the television version of Game of Thrones.

But now, the limestone arch, one of Malta’s most famous landmarks, is no more, having collapsed into the sea after a heavy storm.

Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, said the news was heartbreaking. “Reports commissioned over the years indicated that this landmark would be hard hit by unavoidable natural corrosion. That sad day arrived,” he said.

Apparently, a group of German tourists was on the structure, London Bridge, one of a series of rocks sculptured by the sea, also known as The Twelve Apostles on the Great Ocean Road.

Here's the before...

and here's the after...

Fortunately, none of the tourists were on the section that collapsed, but some were trapped on the section no longer connected to the mainland. They had to be helicoptered off.

Absolutely beautiful area, if you're thinking of visiting.

Some day Niagara Falls will be miles of fierce rapids. A new Hawaiian island will appear. California west of the San Andreas Fault will have traveled to the Aleutian Trench, be subducted and then disappear.

But Keith Richards will still be alive.
