Trump Wants Press Corps To Decide Who Will Receive His Donated Salary

President Donald Trump said via his spokesman on Monday that he wants the White House press corps to decide who will receive his salary when he donates it to an as-yet-unspecified cause at the end of the year.
"Has President Trump donated his paycheck from the month of February like he promised to do during the campaign?" a reporter asked White House press secretary Sean Spicer during his daily briefing.
"The President's intention right now is to donate his salary at the end of the year, and he has kindly asked that you all help determine where that goes," Spicer said. "The way that we can avoid scrutiny is to let the press corps determine where it should go."
Spicer appeared sincere, though there was laughter from those present. "In all seriousness, his view is, he made a pledge to the American people, he wants to donate it to charity and he'd love your help to determine where it should go," he said.

Pick a charity he approves of; seen as compliant.
Pick a charity he doesn't approve of; more grist for the mill of attacks on their legitimacy.

One year seems about the right time. He won't show his tax returns, so we would have to rely on the charities to tell us if they received the gift.

(14,919 posts)Good grief. Does Spicer think we were all born yesterday? If his intention right now is to donate, why doesn't he go ahead and donate right now? He should give the damn money to the Federal Treasury to offset at least a small fraction of the taxpayer money he wastes in a single weekend. His entire annual salary doesn't even amount to one day's worth of that.

(12,663 posts)He'll "donate it at the end of the year". Just like he "donates to charity" all the time. In the mean time, he's collecting $400K (minus federal and NYS taxes), a $50K expense account, a $100K travel account, and a the privilege of using his position as President to get around the Constitutional Emollients clause and make millions more at his real business.
He'll probably donate the use of his "brand" as an "in kind" value and stiff whatever charity he's supposed to be sending the donation to at the end of the year by $399,999.00 - and get a tax write-off for doing it, just as he's always done.
In Drumpf world, if the charity shows that the great "Donald J. Trump" thought that charity was good enough to add his name to it, it would obviously bring in twice or three times the donations, because everyone will see it's a great charity and will give them all sorts of money just to be there with "Team Trump".

Trump's fucking with them. Everything is a game to him. He enjoys jerking people about, getting them to debase themselves for money, and this ploy is no different. He's going to use it against the Press.

(9,350 posts)Who cares what the press corps, or anyone else says, nor thinks about to whom Donald Trump gives the money. He has never seemed to care what others think about what he says, or does. So, why is he now pushing this on the press corps? If push comes to shove he could just give the money back to the taxpayers via giving it back to the Treasury Department.

Schwarzenegger turned down 'petty cash' salary
22/01/2013
http://www.newshub.co.nz/entertainment/schwarzenegger-turned-down-petty-cash-salary-2013012306
Arnold Schwarzenegger has called his estimated US$187,000 Governor of California annual salary "petty cash".
...Arnold refused to accept a wage while he was governor, instead pumping any money he would have made back into the community. He recently claimed he could have made US$200 million from acting during the time and has now insisted he had no need for the salary.

And here's what was behind it:

The truth about Arnold
http://www.salon.com/2005/02/15/arnold_16/
The movie star poses as a corruption-fighting moderate. But since taking office, he's pursued a blatantly right-wing agenda while raking in big bucks from special interests -- and ignoring his own financial conflicts.
On a regular basis, the multimillionaire governor makes important executive decisions that could affect the health of his personal wealth reported to be as much as $100 million.
...So far, Schwarzenegger has not recused himself from signing or vetoing any legislation that could directly or indirectly benefit his personal finances.
To shield a wealthy government official from being paralyzed by possible conflicts of interest, the Political Reform Act allows the officeholder to place assets in a blind trust managed by a disinterested party. ...
In apparent violation of the reform act, Schwarzenegger designated as his trustee his close friend and financial advisor, Paul D. Wachter.
Weve been friends for 25 years and been in business together for less than 15 years, Wachter tells Salon about his relationship with Schwarzenegger. I am his main person in the whole business, financial, legal area. And, obviously, a close confidant. As the blind trustee, I manage all his money.
It doesnt take a doctorate in ethics to see that Wachter is exactly the wrong person to serve as the disinterested trustee. Disinterested party excludes family and business associates, says Tracy Westen, Sterns colleague at the Center for Governmental Studies.
