Democrats Will Reintroduce A Major LGBT Bill As A Wedge Issue In Congress

Source: BuzzFeed

Democrats in Congress plan to reintroduce legislation this month that would ban LGBT discrimination nationwide, despite facing a conservative majority that’s been generally hostile toward the issue.

While the bill has little shot of passage, progressives hope inaction by Republicans can illustrate a chasm between the major political parties as they approach the 2018 mid-term election.

“It’s important for Americans to know whether members of Congress support full equality for our community or whether they support continued discrimination against LGBT Americans,” Rhode Island’s David Cicilline, a Democrat who will sponsor the bill in the House, told BuzzFeed News.

A companion bill will be re-introduced in the Senate by Oregon’s Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, who said colleagues opposed to the bill “should have to stand up and explain why.”

Despite the popularity of marriage equality, I don't see this as a winning issue.
Until the generation that enjoys suppressing bathroom access passes, it's a nation
divided. This is like doubling down on Obama's LGBTQ policies. It's like small-minded
conservative America is saying 'tolerance is fine, just do it elsewhere, and definitely
not in my backyard.'

This isn't going to galvanize persuadables to dump the GOP in 2018. There's gotta be better issues than this one.

I don't like being used as a political football.

Came right out and said it, didn't they? "Wedge issue."

In the current climate, the people opposed to my human rights will respond by committing hate crimes against people like me to show their displeasure.

This isn't just a bad idea. It's asking them to pull some evil, vile shit.
