When you make an inflammatory statement that you intend to express as either humor or irony, there's usually a tag line to clue the listener that you are not meant to be taken literally. It's called effective communication.

In contrast, when you, personally, make a ridiculous observation, such as the surveillance capabilities of a microwave oven, and then let the story percolate for several days, your explanation that it was a joke is not believable. Instead, it illustrates that you are the joke and we have a seriously sad and dangerous national dilemma.
