Story highlights

Republicans are considering scrapping 10 "essential benefits" in their repeal of Obamacare
Sen. Pat Roberts' description of why those benefits weren't essential landed him in hot water

(CNN)Sen. Pat Roberts, a Kansas Republican, apologized Thursday afternoon for making an apparent joke about mammograms related to what features are or are not included in Republicans' plan to repeal and replace Obamacare.

"I deeply regret my comments on such an important topic," Roberts said in a statement. "I know several individuals whose lives have been saved by mammograms, and I recognize how essential they are to women's health. I never intended to indicate otherwise, and I apologize for my comments."

Roberts, who's known for employing a dry sense of humor, told a Talking Points Memo reporter earlier in the day: "I wouldn't want to lose my mammograms." ........................

@AliceOllstein Apparently, Sen. Roberts has no female constituents -- nor does he realize that men can get breast cancer.

@AnitaCreamer @joannesmoot @AliceOllstein Too bad for him that breast cancer in men is not a joke. Mammos in men are imp for diagnosis

Then again, no one could ever accuse Roberts of representing Kansas in any way at all.

That old fuck doesn't even have a LEGAL residence in Kansas yet can be a Senator. He owns a rental home that is yes....RENTED. He claims that qualifies. Total BS. He about got his ass BEAT in his last election. Something he hasn't seen since being in office a hundred years now.

"Roberts's office responded to the story late Friday afternoon, calling it "so far from reality that Kansans won’t believe it." But it did not dispute the basic facts laid out in the piece: That the home Roberts owns in Dodge City has a tenant and that he pays rent at another residence where he stays when in Dodge City."

"Senator Roberts long has owned a home in Dodge City. It currently has a tenant; he also pays rent at a residence where he stays when he is in Dodge City. He pays Kansas state tax and property tax. His three children attended college in Kansas. He is a Kansan. He lives in Dodge City by every measure of residency," said Roberts spokeswoman Sarah Little in a memo to reporters."

That's what these smug SOBs think in their heart of hearts, that women can be covered for the diseases men get but anything else is somehow "unearned" or "extra" or, dare we say it, "frivolous."

Men like this belong in powerless, smoky groups in home basement bars, trying to puzzle out what women want without ever asking one.

what's much more common is that a household buying health insurance has at least one woman of mammogram age who is covered by that insurance. I wonder if Mrs. Roberts called up Pat and chewed him out properly.
