March 31 (Reuters) - Mississippi State pulled off a stunning buzzer-beater overtime win over women's college basketball power Connecticut on Friday to bring an end to the Huskies' 111-game winning streak.
In the NCAA Tournament Final Four matchup, guard Morgan William hit a 10-foot jumper to seal the 66-64 victory and enable Mississippi State to do what no team had been able to since Connecticut were last beaten in November, 2014. ... The result meant that Connecticut (36-1) will not get a chance to add to a streak of four consecutive national championships.
The Bulldogs had led 64-62 before a flagrant foul call on Mississippi State guard Dominique Dillingham allowed Connecticut's Katie Lou Samuelson to tie the game at the free throw line with 26.6 seconds remaining in the extra period.

(6,551 posts)Great news to wake up to. Bravo, Mississippi State! Finally, some team other than Connecticut will win the championship.

(67,782 posts)Almost all of Mississippi State's players were from the general area - Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia.
On the other hand, Connecticut "shopped" for players, and only one player is from Connecticut and two from New England. The rest are from all over the country.
That is not what college sports was supposed to be.
Hopefully when he wakes up this morning Auriemma's swollen ego and swollen head will have shrunk to a normal size. I thought his two interviews were smug and conceited, and he only glancingly gave credit to the team that won the game.

(62,416 posts)Geno also sits right north of talent rich New York City.
Like always, if a player has talent they want to go where they can win. Who has won more than Geno?
Compared to the men's game, the talent is not as deep neither for players or coaches.
On another note glad to see Dawn Staley's team win, but sad to see Tara Vandeveer's team lose.
