Trump Pulls Back Obama-Era Protections For Women Workers

Source: NBC News

With little notice, President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order that advocates say rolls back hard-fought victories for women in the workplace.

On March 27, Trump revoked the 2014 Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces order then-President Barack Obama put in place to ensure that companies with federal contracts comply with 14 labor and civil rights laws. The Fair Pay order was put in place after a 2010 Government Accountability Office investigation showed that companies with rampant violations were being awarded millions in federal contracts.

In an attempt to keep the worst violators from receiving taxpayer dollars, the Fair Pay order included two rules that impacted women workers: paycheck transparency and a ban on forced arbitration clauses for sexual harassment, sexual assault or discrimination claims.

Noreen Farrell, director of the anti-sex discrimination law firm Equal Rights Advocates, said Trump went "on the attack against workers and taxpayers." "We have an executive order that essentially forces women to pay to keep companies in business that discrimination against them, with their own tax dollars," said Farrell. "It's an outrage."

And remember it is a quote of a spoken sentence, which places the bar lower than written text. Spoken language is allowed to be less formal. If they corrected the noun "discrimination", and used the verb "discriminate", it would at least make sense, though it would still be a run-on sentence.

Why didn't editors make the correction? Cost cuts probably. You'll see a lot more grammatical errors these last few years, in sources where such errors were previously rare.

The patriarchal mind-set is a cultural thing that afflicts everyone caught up in it, men and women alike. If the women behind the scenes were willing to stand up in favor of women's rights, it would be a different picture.

There are plenty of men who do not, apparently, feel threatened by women. Past presidents Obama and Clinton come to mind. Eleanor Roosevelt must have had a supportive husband, insofar as it was possible at that time and place.

The problem is that the patriarchal structure is ingrained in certain subcultures, so that people (male and female) raised in those subcultures are indoctrinated almost from birth with a value system that is oppressive to women.

I seem to have aways been a women's rights person. One of my mother's favorite stories about me is when I was about 5, and wanted to know why, when we said our prayers at bedtime, we couldn't say "Ah, ladies," instead of "Ah, men."

(Gave up bedtime prayers decades ago.)

Do matriarchal societies repress men?

Some tribes of monkeys are patriarchal and some are matriarchal. The patriarchal ones are ruled by whoever is toughest at fighting, so young male monkeys tend to dominate. Matriarchal monkey societies apparently have great respect for age. Older monkeys are more respected. The only exception pointed out by the researchers was that a female monkey lost status if she had an infant with a birth defect.

There are not a lot of matriarchal human societies now. It appears there were some historically, but because most scientists studying the matter previously have been male, and the products of patriarchal training, they tend to interpret evidence they find as lending support to their preconceived ideas. If they find weapons, for example, they just assume the weapons were used by men. Cooking implements? Must have been women. Obviously bits of pottery shards, arrowheads and the like don't come with gender-specific markings. And no, that isn't my idea, I've read that too. One fairly advanced matriarchal society in northern Africa seems to have placed high value on the arts. Some more primitive groups with matriarchies simply had division of labor; the women ruled in the home and in the village, and men handled hunting and fighting. Without actually seeing a functioning matriarchal society in the current world, I doubt anyone can answer your question as to how men would be treated in one.
