Donald Trump Signs Controversial Internet Privacy Bill
Source: Mediaite
Donald Trump has signed a controversial measure that would allow Internet providers to more easily sell user data to third parties without their consent. The repeal of the Obama-era FCC regulation passed through Congress along narrow party-line votes.
The repeal was a major win for Internet providers like Version and Comcast, which will now have similar to carte blanche access to user data as web companies like Google and Facebook. The Obama-era rule, which had not yet taken effect, would have required companies to receive user permission before selling their data to third parties.
President Trump and Congress have appropriately invalidated one part of the Obama-era plan for regulating the Internet, said FCC chairman Ajit Pai, a Trump appointee. Those flawed privacy rules, which never went into effect, were designed to benefit one group of favored companies, not online consumers.
Democrats and civil libertarian lobbied strenuously and unsuccessfully against the measure. The move from Trump is part of a robust, though under the radar, effort to shake up the way Americans receive Internet services. Congressional Republicans have already signaled their intention to overturn so-called Net Neutrality, which requires Internet providers to create equal access to all online content.

(33,148 posts)I guess the Redeploricans feel it's okay if some private entity is profiting off of the data instead of the Government using it for National Security reasons.
Oh, Hypocrisy... Your name is Republican.

(1 post)So, the same guy who said his privacy was compromised a few days ago just signed this bill despite having the chance to veto it? Also, how long can one expect to rely on third party privacy tools like ivacy, tor and other anti-tracking software? I mean, should it not have been stopped before it made its way into the House. Can this data not get into undesirable hands? Why is it when I say, "I deserve privacy" no lawmaker cares but when Nike says, "We need to know why ol Aleks prefers Calvin Klein instead." they're all racing to pass this law. Almost feels like with this bill now a law, we're gonna give North Korea a run for its money.
