White House blames Obama admin for suspected Syria chemical attack
Source: ABC News
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that a suspected chemical attack in a Syrian town was a "consequence of the past administration's weakness and irresolution."
"Today's attack is reprehensible and cannot be ignored by the civilized world," Spicer told reporters. "These heinous actions by the Bashar al Assad regime are a consequence of the past administration's weakness and irresolution. President Obama said in 2012 that he'd establish a red line against the use of chemical weapons and then did nothing. The US stands with our allies across the globe to condemn this intolerable act."
The alleged gas attack in the town of Khan Sheikhoun in northern Syria killed at least 58 civilians, including 11 children, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based monitoring group.

There's a better case to be made that Assad knows that orange boy is Putin's little toady and won't say or do anything (which seems to be the case).

(what other cliche can I use here...review of myself there).
He's been president for almost 90 days, he could have made changes but is too stupid to actually have his own plans. He just firebombs everyone else' plans. He's the one that was making lovey dovey with Assad recently saying we would let him stay president. Several days later this happens. Seems to me this is a reaction to Hair Furor's words now, not policies that were present in the past. He's the disaster on the world and US stage that keeps getting larger. Where will it end?

Jan 2017: Trump enters White House, advocating better relations with Russia, Assad's ally
30 Mar 2017: Trump's UN ambassador Nikki Haley says getting rid of Assad no longer a priority
4 April 2017: Assad uses chemical weapons for the first time in 5 years
I can see which American president deserves some blame for this, and it's not Obama.

(42,704 posts)2012: Assad appears to use chemical weapons, Obama administration states use of such weapons is a "red line" the crossing of which will result in consequences.
2013: There are reports of new use of chemical weapons in Syria. On September 10, 2013, President Obama gives speech to nation acknowledging that Assad regime has again been using chemical weapons. In speech, Obama acknowledges that the US should not get drawn into another military conflict with boots on the ground, but nonetheless states that he is asking Congress to authorize military force while the administration continues to seek a diplomatic solution for the Syrian crisis. Several days later, with the request for authorization to use military force facing opposition from members of both parties (and specifically from a certain Donald J. Trump) and possible defeat if put to a vote, the US and Russia reach a deal resulting in a UN Resolution under which Syria was required to turn or destroy its stockpiles of chemical weapons by mid 2014.
2014: While Syria more or less complies with the 2013 resolution, that agreement does not cover chlorine- based weapons. Before the year is out, there is strong evidence (acknowledged by Secretary of State) that Assad is using chlorine gas.
2015: The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons/UN Joint Mission in Syria continues to report that chlorine gas is being used by Assad and there are additional reports that mustard gas has been used.
2016: Obama administration issues statement acknowledging OPCW/UN findings, stating that "It is now impossible to deny that the Syrian regime has repeatedly used industrial chlorine as a weapon against its own people." The administration condemns the Syrian use of chlorine gas, but reports of use of chlorine gas continue through the end of the year. There also are reports that the rebels are engaging in chemical warfare, possibly using mustard gas.
Again, Spicer is full of shit to lay the most recent attacks off on Obama, particularly in light of Trump's past opposition to military action in Syria and his laissez-faire attitude about Assad (expressed during the campaign and reiterated in just the past few days). But the timeline is not nearly as clean and simple as your post suggest.

(59,503 posts)One of many articles that verify that number - http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/08/u-s-ship-completes-destruction-of-syrias-most-dangerous-chemicals/
Consider how volatile Syria was and is and it is clear this resolution was a BIG deal considering the damage those deadly chamicals could have done. It is true that Russia and the US negotiated this. It is also true that before the US threat of force, Russia made no efforts to push Syria to do anything like this.
I think that Obama's PR problem on this is that you had neocons who prefered did not support Obama's call for targeted force because they wanted Obama to do what was needed to remove Assad and people angry that he called for force at all. I remember DU when Kerry announced that deal and the main sentiment was anger at Obama and Kerry for being war mongers - which neither are. In addition to US sentiment, most of the Sunni nations and Israel were disappointed that the US did not aggressively enter that civil war. They are the ones who have spun the idea that Obama drew a line in the sand and then ignored it.
It is bizzare that Trump wants it both ways - he has suggested he is more willing to make a deal leaving Assad in power and Spicer seems to want to claim that any problems going forward are due to Obama not having healed the entire world in his 8 years. Imagine if Obama's answer to the financial mess - was just to point fingers at Bush, rather than taking prudent actions.

(42,704 posts)From that point forward, it appears that Syria has been using chlorine gas -- not covered by the resolution.

(59,503 posts)Just wanted to point out it really is a big deal that 600 tons, an amount I can't even picture, was there and was removed and destroyed by the US. There are clown all over twitter thinking they are making a brilliant point -- pointing to Obama or Kerry not getting ALL the chemical weapons out.
I do think the Trump "logic" is completely strange. he was not in favor of regime change -- yet he faults Obama for not getting Assad out.
