Gov. Brown declares California drought emergency is over
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
Startlingly green hills, surging rivers and the snow-wrapped Sierra Nevada had already signaled what Gov. Jerry Brown made official Friday: The long California drought is over.
Brown issued an executive order that lifts the drought emergency in all but a handful of San Joaquin Valley counties where some communities are still coping with dried-up wells.
He also made it clear that the need for conservation is not going away.
This drought emergency is over, but the next drought could be around the corner, Brown said in a statement. Conservation must remain a way of life.

(36,444 posts)Do you know the backstory how he got labeled with it, and how, on a stretch, Jerry Brown could even be called the Godfather of cellular telephones?

(20,875 posts)What I would like to know is will my water bill go back down to where it was before it doubled last year?

(5,722 posts)I feel this is similar to any idea of carbon taxes in that people will cut back if it effects their bottom line.

(21,157 posts)I love Jerry Brown and think he is the best governor we've ever had. Those in the wings to take his place are well seasoned and can handle the task when he is term limited in 2018.

(129,084 posts)It seemed almost intractable since it went on for so long... And during the earlier part of the rainy season, many hydrologists and meteorologists were unsure how much of a dent would be put in the drought this year.
Agree that vigilance would need to be key because it won't take much to get back into that "dry begets dry" pattern.

(46,192 posts)Conservation got us through the drought and through it we made more water available (with less environmental harm) than billions of dams and reservoirs projects would have.

(31,173 posts)Those farms that had first dibs water rights mostly did okay. Those that didn't idled thousands of workers as fields laid unplanted.
A lot of cities found themselves short due to poor planning and had to scramble to buy water deliveries.
Delta levees are near the point of failure. They need major repair.
Just because we got through this drought doesn't mean the next one will be any easier. And there will be a next one. Plus, climate change means the snow melt will occur faster than in earlier decades. More of it will be lost to sea. We do need larger storage capacity.

(12,213 posts)California weather on the network news. They said the weather person always stood in front of the map of California.
Probably because we don't get much crazy weather in CA (fires and earthquakes, though), but they thought they were being California haters.
I myself love rain, so I've been enjoying it. We had a little more last night.
