US evangelical Christians accused of promoting homophobia in Africa

Source: The Guardian

Christian evangelical groups in the US are attempting a "cultural colonisation" of Africa, opening offices in numerous countries to promote attacks on homosexuality and abortion, according to an investigation by a liberal thinktank.

American religious organisations are expanding operations across the continent, lobbying for conservative policies and laws and fanning homophobia, argues the Boston-based Political Research Associates (PRA).

The groups include the American Centre for Law and Justice (ACLJ), founded by the televangelist Pat Robertson, which has established bases in Kenya and Zimbabwe.

"The religious right (in effect) claims that human rights activists are neocolonialists out to destroy Africa," the report states. Groups named in it vehemently rejected the claims.

1. Hope you don't mind me adding this, but this video explains it, too. I found it heartbreaking.

The video description:

A Thousand Suns tells the story of the Gamo Highlands of the African Rift Valley and the unique worldview held by the people of the region. This isolated area has remained remarkably intact both biologically and culturally. It is one of the most densely populated rural regions of Africa yet its people have been farming sustainably for 10,000 years. Shot in Ethiopia, New York and Kenya, the film explores the modern world's untenable sense of separation from and superiority over nature and how the interconnected worldview of the Gamo people is fundamental in achieving long-term sustainability, both in the region and beyond.

From the comments:

All I can say is G-d forgive us. I am a Christian and christians like this disgust me. The religious system I was born into has forsaken G-d for money. We see ourselves as separate from the creation of G-d, and have raped this world. G-d forgive us you are in all people. G-d you are in the storm, you are in the animals, you are in these. G-d forgive us. Seeing things like this separate me further from people of this religious system. They are a cursed people upon G-d's Earth.

Of course, what Islam is forcing on the peoples of Africa is not so good either. It seems Africa remains one of the last frontiers on Earth for exploting and abusing its resources and people.

Somehow they don't see this is neo-colonialism. It is. The Westerners always came with food in hand (for those who "saw the light&quot . The worst of the cultists in this country focus their efforts elsewhere, because they know that there is little social base for their nonsense in this country, outside a few pockets in culturally backward areas.

The carry over from these efforts in Africa have made it harder for the United Methodist Church to change its policies regarding homosexuality. The Church in the US favors change by growing majority, but if anything, the resistance by those in Africa has hardened. Unfortunately the vote every four years is at the World Conference. I suspect that the propaganda described in the OP may be affecting the stance of UMC members there.
