Stockholm attack: Uzbek man held on suspicion of terrorism
Source: CNN
A man arrested on suspicion of terrorism offenses after the Stockholm truck attack is from the central Asian republic of Uzbekistan and was known to intelligence services, Swedish authorities said.
Suspicions about the arrested man have strengthened during the course of the investigation, Dan Eliasson, chief of the Swedish Police told a press briefing Saturday.
Police are investigating a "technical device" found in the vehicle used in the attack, he said.
"We confirm that we have found a device in the truck that doesn't belong there. We are now investigating its content," Eliasson said. "Whether this was a classic bomb or some sort of flammable device is now a matter for our analysis."

Joachim Kemiri, who was born in Sweden to a Tunisian father and a Swedish mother, says migrants and refugees had been arriving in too large numbers.
"Too many of them have been coming in too fast," the 29-year-old railway worker said. "It's too much."

(111,272 posts)for a lot of these mad at the world guys. Funny that particular country never made it to any of Dolt's lists, his business dealings there could probably take a closer look, since the country is on the DHS list.
What the Swedes (and we) need to remember is that 99.9% of the people who come in want only to live, work, pay their rent and taxes, raise their kids, and cope with daily life without having bombs rain down on them or secret police to arrest the whole family because a teenager said something stupid.
Yes, there needs to be a vetting process and since violence toward women is a pretty common determinant, maybe a focus on that in the process of determining who the bad guys might be is a good idea..
And people, there will be some intercultural friction. You don't always have to like them. However, giving refugees a home and a chance for a better life is the right thing to do.

(8,303 posts)1) I don't think Uzbekis are overrepresented among violent extremists in the West.
2) I don't think Americans generally have the right to preach to the Swedes on these issues. Beams in one's own eye and all that. Really, dude? We should be telling the Swedes all about tolerance? It makes me wince. The effort the whole country has made is a monument to human decency. Given your feelings, you should be besieging your own government to try to do something similar, rather than telling a country that literally overloaded its entire humanitarian infrastructure to help refugees that they are being phobic.
3) This wasn't apparently just one man. They've arrested tonight three more men who were at the scene of the attack in another vehicle. They've found some sort of bomb apparatus in Oslo (apparently the police are sweeping, with good reason). Oslo and Stockholm are different places.
4) This man was reported to the authorities previously, and an investigation found nothing of acute concern at that time. In other words, they have enough persons with some sort of extremist sympathies that they can't pick the serious ones out of the pile and probably can't thoroughly follow up on such reports. Shades of the Boston Bombing!
Given these facts, it is apparent that the Swedes are dealing with a broader security situation in their country. Concerns about their security and their security agencies' ability to deal with these risks are clearly well-founded among the population, and the government is not going to be able to get away with treating this as an isolated incident, nor, to its credit, is it attempting to in any way obfuscate the situation.
When one has circles of violent extremism popping up in a country, something has to change.
To give this a little perspective, the Swedish population, after being swollen by an historic influx of refugees, is about 10 million. The population of the NYC metro area is about 20 million. If a similar attack had occurred in Times Square, and the resulting investigation was mounting up the way the Swedes are experiencing, it would be huge US news. The president would be weighing in, the NYT would be preaching, the mayor would be promising to heighten security, and all the law and domestic security agencies, local, state and federal, would be in a cycle of major investigation and conference to figure out how the situation could be addressed.

(111,272 posts)There's the lunatic and the ones who put him up to it, maybe even helped him jack the truck.
I was pointing out that Uzbekistan is on the DHS list but not on Dolt45's list, just more hypocrisy on his part, and I have read of more than one Uzbek being nabbed for mayhem in the EU. Given the state of that country for decades under their last strong man, I'm not surprised.
And I wasn't lecturing to Swedes as I was talking to people here who read about terrorism and don't want them to come here. Well, they're here and a lot of them were born here so shutting our borders isn't the answer. It never is. However, it's easy even for people on DU to look at their kids and want to protect them from random violence by idiots from somewhere else. Most of our idiots are homegrown, though.
