"Moment of truth" has come, army tells Syria rebels (drops leaflets)

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Syrian security forces dropped leaflets across Damascus on Tuesday warning rebel gunmen to give up their arms and surrender, opposition activists said.

"The weapon you are carrying has become a burden on you, and there is no hope for you to survive unless you drop your weapon," said the leaflets, dropped by helicopters.

"The moment of truth has come. The men of the Syrian Arab Army are coming, time is running out and the wise man is the one who saves himself," said the leaflets, signed by the armed forces general command.

Activists reported seeing the leaflets in the neighborhoods of Zahira and Midan, where the army launched a fierce counter-attack against last week's rebel offensive in the capital.

1. Nobody seems to think so, but the army has been pretty restrained.

Some theorized it was because they secretly sympathized with the insurgents. I have no way of knowing, but it does appear that, at least at times, the Syrian army goes on the offensive, and is able to kill a large number of insurgents and chase away many more.

3. Unfortunately, there have been summary executions by both sides.

I hope the Syrian Army will treat captives well, but I don't doubt many soldiers and insurgents alike will continue to be summarily killed.

4. It was on tv, or on the net. A group of rebels gave up their arms; they were handcuffed as prisoner

5. Yes, but we think video is somehow more real than reports.

Of people like Syrian regular soldiers bound and shot in the back of the head.

"Both side does it" doesn't preclude "one side does it." It just precludes "just one side did it." It also precludes "one side did it just once."

In other words, both sides have done it more than once, and in the last few weeks. I mean, they have the same training, right? Most of the FSA was still SAA two months ago?
