Gingrich Floats Idea of Anti-Romney Alliance

from Political Wire:

In an interview with Laura Ingraham, Newt Gingrich raised the possibility of creating an anti-Mitt Romney alliance with Rick Santorum.

Ingraham: Can you see a scenario under which the two of you would align together to try to defeat the establishment candidate, Mitt Romney?

Gingrich: Absolutely. Of course. I mean Rick and I have a 20-year friendship, we are both rebels, we both came into this business as reformers, we both dislike deeply the degree to which the establishment sells out the American people. We both think Washington has to be changed in very fundamental ways, and we have lots of things that fit together. And the thing that's interesting is if you take the votes, you add to that Perry and Bachmann, you begin to see the size of the conservative vote compared to Romney...if you take, you know, Santorum and Perry and Bachmann and Gingrich you get some sense of what a small minority Romney really represents.

which is why he dropped even the pretense of civility. I suspect that he is motivated primarily by hatred at this point. Now, I think the majority of things included in the anti-Gingrich ads were pretty much things that were public. They are not lies, just not chacterized as Gingrich wants. He clearly blames Romney for his fall from the top - though it started BEFORE the ads, with the reaction of his former peers and his outlandish proposals.

I suspect that, in addition to hatred, I suspect that he thinks if he engineers a convalescence of all the anti Romney vote behind one guy and he wins that Gingrich will be in the Cabinet.

What is stunning is that while many politicians are said to never forget a slight or transgression that Newt is so public with this and so vengeful.

I think it will backfire and help Romney. I suspect that Newt is so much a loose cannon now that he will not do anything effective and it will lead to either sympathy for Romney or the idea that he was "tested by fire" when he really wasn't. Not to mention it distracts from the fact that Romney, in spite of a clean image, is the one with the nasty attacks on the others - done with plausible (sort of) deniability.

Seriously, if he were in his right mind and really wanted to destroy Mitt, he would not have announced his intention and he would have tried to be somewhat covert in doing what he was doing. In fact, one way to have hit Romney would have been to have - as best he could - spoken against what the ads said and continued to hit Romney for having all this negativity against others coming from him. The timing would then have put Romney in somewhat of a box. If he then, as he likely will, have had his people attack Santorum, you could then define Romney as the one with the dirty tricks - like Nixon, and the two Bushes. (Note not Reagan, the beloved President of the Republicans.)

This could hurt a man already justifiably seen as not likable. Throw in that he already was caught doing an obviously unfair ad of Obama that he got called on.

not screaming but encouraging gingrich and taking credit for getting santorum 'win' because santorum evoked limbaugh to surge despite usual warnings from pol consultants not to so they didn't alienate the indies and moderates (pol consultants know limbaugh's worth is in unchallenged messaging and swiftboating, not endorsement).

he brought up mccain and limbaugh senses again he can play a big part like he did forcing mccain to take palin in exchange for getting him on board.

limbaugh can backtrack and rationalize any hypocrisy and could get on board with romney later if they give him VP but he's really going further than if rove was still in charge holding him back.

general election against an incumbent President. First of all, he makes this announcement of an alliance with Santorum without apparently discussing it with Santorum. How stupid is that? Santorum is likely holding on to the hope of being the VP selection (Probably a long shot but nevertheless - fact based reasoning is not a strong suit for Santorum). In any case, he has nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain by publicly rebuffing Newt. I predict this will happen. Clearly the only person who really benefits from this Newt temper tantrum is President Obama.

Romney was supposed to be the anointed one. The Republican establishment wants Romney to be the
nominee so bad, you can taste it. I have CNBC on in the background at work ALL DAY--and every single
corporatist, one-percenter CEO wants to suck on Romney's toes (gross I know, but you should hear all of
their Romney-worshipping, it's sick).

So, along comes Santorum--doing well in the Iowa caucus and suddenly Newt Gingrich is on fire with rage against
Romney.

Oh the establishment! What will they do? They certainly didn't anticipate this.

You know what this reminds me of? The Jurassic Park movie--where those self-absorbed lawyers and business tycoons
thought they could breed velociraptors and control them all inside fences within an amusement park. You can't control
wild, crazy, nut job politicians--any more than you can contain bloodthirsty dinosaurs!

Oh look! Here's Newt having a Romneyasauras snack! (Seriously...Newt is going to have an rage aneurysm. The man

A well-paid position in which he doesn't have to do anything would be just up his alley.

A pay-off for getting his face off the TV.

No doubt a sufficient sum of money will be handed over to him to keep his wife in jewels and cruises for a few months -- and then the election will be over -- and he and the Republican Party will move on.

Some men promise their young wives a house, some the moon -- Gingrich no doubt promised a First-Lady-Ship.

Well, we all face disappointments.

It would have been much tougher for the Gingrich's had he won Iowa. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

Romney is the inevitable 2012 Republican candidate. This is a year in which Republicans will probably lose. Rove and his buddies want to make sure that the Republican who loses is a "moderate," not a conservative, and above all not a representative of the Religious Right -- because Rove knows that the only reason an ordinary person would vote for a Republican is if he or she thinks that God wants him to.

Romney, a Mormon, is being set up to take the blame for the Republican loss in 2012. That is how I see it.

Newt will not cause waves. Wealthy Republicans will make sure of that.

So now he's out to fuck up Mitt Romney, despite Romney being the most palatable Republican candidate out there.
