Sherman Hemsley, known for his starring role on "The Jeffersons," has died at age 74.
Although the cause of Hemsley's death is unclear, TMZ reports that the actor passed away at his El Paso, Texas, home.
Hemsley made a name for himself as George Jefferson, carrying the iconic sitcom for a decade and earning a 1984 Emmy nomination for his work as lead actor in a comedy series. (32,034 posts)That show was a great combo of Sherman's talent and Norman Lear's genius. Shocking to hear this news now. For some reason I never heard about Sherman's death on the latest NPR bulletin. I was born in the '90s but am grateful to have discovered "The Jeffersons", "Sanford and Son", and "All in the Family".

(17,621 posts)It's about a black family struggling to survive the mean streets of the soith side of Chicago. They still show it on TVLand, I think. I still consider it the most provocative of the old sitcoms I grew up on.

(979 posts)That is the skyline that they show in the opening sequence.
The show also featured a young Janet Jackson.

(20,166 posts)The first few seasons, anyway. It got kind of thin the longer it was on, as can happen to most shows.
Still, good ensemble cast, but Hemsley was the best thing about.
RIP, Sherman, and thanks for all the many, many laughs you gave me.
