Cameras denied for Aurora theater shooting suspect's next court date

....Eighteenth Judicial District Chief Judge William Sylvester on Tuesday denied a request for video and still cameras to document the hearing this coming Monday at the Arapahoe County courthouse. Sylvester's order says he weighed whether allowing cameras in the courtroom would interfere with Holmes' right to a fair trial or would be too disruptive.
In making his decision, Sylvester said he considered the objection of Holmes' attorneys to the presence of cameras. It's unclear what the attorneys wrote in their motion because it is sealed, along with the rest of the case file.
The hearing, "is open to the media and to the general public, so the media and public will have ready access to the proceeding," Sylvester wrote in his order.
One video and one still camera were permitted in the courtroom Monday when Holmes made his first appearance before a judge. Images of Holmes with a blank expression on his face, occasionally spreading his eyes wide or appearing to dose off, led to widespread debate about whether Holmes is mentally unwell, drugged or faking.

He cannot get a fair trial in Arapahoe County. I know. I live here. Too many people are already convinced he's guilty.
If he is found competent to stand trial, it will be in some other county.

(53,410 posts)Trials are public. They're not supposed to be hidden or privatized or kept secret behind closed doors. If they allow the general public and trial artists in then why not cameras, especially when they're kept stationary? Gawking has nothing to do with it. We live in an age where the general public is all over the world and connected digitally to what interests them.

(53,410 posts)Since that has always been the case and is an established rule.
But aside from the gawking or media circus there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who want to watch these high profile trials, because they're interested in the process and how it works. It's educational and informative and heaven knows the people can use some education in this country. Otherwise you would have one group of elites knowing the laws and the process and another group calling for lynchings with nothing in between.
