Putin-linked think tank drew up plan to sway 2016 U.S. election - documents
Source: Reuters
A Russian government think tank controlled by Vladimir Putin developed a plan to swing the 2016 U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump and undermine voters faith in the American electoral system, three current and four former U.S. officials told Reuters.
They described two confidential documents from the think tank as providing the framework and rationale for what U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded was an intensive effort by Russia to interfere with the Nov. 8 election. U.S. intelligence officials acquired the documents, which were prepared by the Moscow-based Russian Institute for Strategic Studies [en.riss.ru/], after the election.
The institute is run by retired senior Russian foreign intelligence officials appointed by Putins office.
The first Russian institute document was a strategy paper written last June that circulated at the highest levels of the Russian government but was not addressed to any specific individuals.

(35,359 posts)"Voter fraud" was a common claim for why anybody but the "correct" candidate could win.
The dividing line between who claimed this is not just reality/irrealis but measured/immoderate in speech. Lots of outspoken used it. HRC didn't, I'm unaware that BS used it. She's both reality-biased and measured. BS is mostly reality-based. TTrump has never been measured in his speech. Nor esp. reality-based.
It's been a recurring theme here at least since 2004.
but the maggot started making it part of his stump speech late in the campaign as what appeared to be the excuse he would use when he lost. I don't ever recall any nominee using the excuse before they lost. It's possible my memory isn't serving me well.

(1,237 posts)To undermine Americas election system? I'm sure he didn't intend to harm our country as he repeated the claim numerous times while being reminded the harm his unmeasured claims were causing to our country. It was measured and he was directed by Putin IMO.

(22,651 posts)crap, money laundering in Russia would keep his mouth shut, let the Republican party tell him what to do, approve any appointment's 'suggested'. Manafort drops from the sky into trump campaign, lists of "generals" who support trump campaign drop from the fucking sky into trumps campaign.
Republican party colluded with Russia for hacked files, for everything they could get about DNC, lists of voters, probably Sanders lists of supporters as well. Republicans collected the 'stolen goods' off WikiLeaks.
Republicans directed their easy/peasie patsyman trump and they still do though their medias like fox & f(R)iends.

(5,271 posts)"Four of the officials said the approach outlined in the June strategy paper was a broadening of an effort the Putin administration launched in March 2016. That month the Kremlin instructed state-backed media outlets, including international platforms Russia Today and Sputnik news agency, to start producing positive reports on Trumps quest for the U.S. presidency, the officials said.
Russia Today and Sputnik published anti-Clinton stories while pro-Kremlin bloggers prepared a Twitter campaign calling into question the fairness of an anticipated Clinton victory, according to a report by U.S. intelligence agencies on Russian interference in the election made public in January. [bit.ly/2kMiKSA]
Neither of the Russian institute documents mentioned the release of hacked Democratic Party emails to interfere with the U.S. election, according to four of the officials. The officials said the hacking was a covert intelligence operation run separately out of the Kremlin.
The overt propaganda and covert hacking efforts reinforced each other, according to the officials. Both Russia Today and Sputnik heavily promoted the release of the hacked Democratic Party emails, which often contained embarrassing details."

Republicans are FAILING treasonously in their primary responsibility to the United States of America and the citizens thereof.

The horrible way that Americans have taken to distrusting election results and election financing?
The way Russians agents made an issue of emails, etc., to push votes away from HRC? Because she was the real target among candidates. It would have helped BS and all(R) for a while. It went proTrump when it was clearly him vs. HRC.
Problem is that the Russian effort gave us and others stories many liked. We lapped it up. And that's not the russians' fault.

(1,204 posts)difficult to get private emails and stuff, but what can be done to prevent such people from engaging in influence operations? If we can produce concrete evidence that Trump and his folks colluded with the Russians, then that is something we can deal with. However, we keep hearing of big breaks coming but it seems like it's either not as concrete as stated or it's being suppressed. If the latter is the case, then someone needs to come forward to expose. But even if that happened I would be skeptical, as any sort of turmoil no matter where it comes from is beneficial to other governments. Then if there is a so-called "smoking gun" that everyone runs with but that turns out to be false, then that works in Trump's favor. I'm rambling.

(32,767 posts)He talked all year about "voter fraud" meaning that some people would be voting who are perhaps registered incorrectly or illegally. The implication was that only Democrats would do that, either because they weren't citizens or they didn't/couldn't show a proper ID.
In October during one of the debates with Hillary (it might have been the 3rd debate) Trump said that if Hillary wins the election, it's proof that the election was rigged. That's the first time I ever remember him saying anything like that. It was repeated over and over like a mantra. Accusing Hillary of cheating and rigging the election, and it came directly from the Russians who were telling him what to do. We're reading this all now on the Steele report.
"Voter fraud" came early. "Rigged election" came in October and they beat it to death until the election.
It's exactly how it happened.

(7,543 posts)This was always one of the few types of things at which the old Soviets were actually pretty good. Now that I've spent a couple of months deliberating I've come to see it as a lesson we perhaps needed to learn. I read a comment from Noam Chomsky that said the world was laughing at us...not because we elected a snake-oil salesman as President, but because we got a taste of our own medicine.
This is the type of thing our government does to other nations all the time...using somewhat different methods, perhaps, but nonetheless, we interfere with other nations' political processes all the time. Don't tell me it's about anything other than the money, as we invariably intercede on behalf of corporate interest. America tends to make everyone else's business their business. Our government's (both parties included) clear intent is to make the world safe for Exxon and Colonel Sanders...to ensure that corporations have the unobstructed right to exploit anyone and everyone any where they wish.
Take the money out of politics or all successful political parties will invariably institutionalize the legal graft.
