North Korea 'ready to strike' US aircraft carrier

North Korea 'ready to strike' US aircraft carrier
23.04.2017

The Japanese navy destroyers Samidare and Ashigara have joined a US carrier strike group for drills in the western Pacific Ocean. North Korea said it was prepared to hit back if necessary.

Pyongyang remained defiant on Sunday, with a newspaper of the ruling party publishing a commentary likening the US aircraft carrier to a "gross animal" and threatening to strike it. "Our revolutionary forces are combat-ready to sink a US nuclear powered aircraft carrier with a single strike," the Rodong Sinmun newspaper said.

A spokesperson for the USS Carl Vinson posted on its Facebook page on Sunday that the strategic maneuvers and communication drills would last several days. "We always look forward to operating with our Japanese partners," the carrier strike group's commander Rear Admiral Jim Kilby, was quoted as saying. "The relationship between the JMSDF [Japanese self defense force] and the United States is better than ever and it's in part thanks to these bilateral exercises."

US Vice President Mike Pence said during a visit to Australia on his tour of Asia on Saturday that the Carl Vinson would be in the Sea of Japan within days. The aircraft carrier and accompanying warships are heading toward waters off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force amid elevated tensions. On April 8, the US Navy said it had directed the naval strike group to divert to North Korea from Singapore, but it has since emerged that the group sailed south first to conduct drills with the Australian navy.

There are growing concerns that Pyongyang might conduct another nuclear test or fire more ballistic missiles to coincide with when North Korea marks the 85th anniversary of its army on Tuesday. Its latest ballistic missile launch attempt was on April 16, shortly after the country marked the 105th birthday of its late founding leader, Kim Il Sung. The launch failed.

Koreans really have a nuclear fetish don't they? I mean ...... they bring up that word all the time! Its not an aircraft carrier, its a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Would be funny if the "leader" wasn't so unstable.

On the other hand ........ the ship has a Facebook page? I mean .. its ...... I'm .... really?

5. You mean after they get past the hundred ships and planes in the carrier strike group?

A warhead launched from a fishing boat could not do it.

Best odds are probably to activate the NK sleeper cell aboard the US sub in the Vinson's carrier group.

7. Closer then a mile and even then it would be unlikely

A quick search suggests NK nuclear weapons are roughly the same size as the ones used in the Bikini Atoll tests against ships.

A surface burst, which is what would happen if carried in a ship, would reduce the blast effects of the air burst as listed in the above link and the much deeper waters of the Sea of Japan would reduce the underwater effect also listed in the above link.

Not that I think NK could get cloe enough, but best guess is a lot of radioactive water and minor to light damage to the exteriors of the ships. US Navy ships are designed with a wash down system to deal with radioactive materials on the exterior of the ship.

Any civilian ship would be allowed to even get within visual sight of a carrier at sea.

6. More noise from NK mostly intended for internal consumption

It is extremely unlikely that the NK air force or navy could get close enough to even attack the Carl Vinson task force much less sink the carrier.

IF they chose to set off a nuke at sea or in So. Korea, they'd likely be the ones to suffer the most from the aftermath. And then, WHO KNOWS who else might start lobbing a few into NK??? And THAT would be the end of NK as we know it. I'm not suggesting Un wouldn't do it - I'm just saying they might live (although painfully) to regret what they started.
