Republicans exempt their own insurance from their latest health care proposal

Republican legislators want to keep popular Obamacare provisions for themselves and their staff.
House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts Members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan.
The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacares ban on pre-existing conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.
Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) who authored this amendment confirmed this was the case: members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping this Obamacare regulations.

(19,204 posts)will hail this as a YUGE win for their messiah, and roar with approval at the future of Republican healthcare.
Until they get their first bill for their healthcare premiums, and find out they have to sell their collection of MAGA trucker caps just to keep their insurance. Then they'll find out that their prized collection of MAGA trucker caps is worth absolutely nothing. Then, and ONLY then, will they realize the orange shit-gibbon has played them for the fools they are.

(890 posts)the bullshit they spew about freedumbs and health care savings accounts etc. that they expect us to believe. Nothing says it clearer than this. If what they were proposing was so Christ-blessed awesome, they'd make sure they had it too. No town hall should go by without Rs getting asked why the American people don't deserve they same health care members of Congress get. Just utterly shameless, selfishness, I-got-mine-fuck-you. Makes me so mad.

(15,290 posts)Somehow I doubt insurers in states that "opt out" of the ACA are going to craft unique individual policies for a few staffers. Even if they do, I can't see how the premiums would remain very affordable for staffers even assuming subsidies stay around.

(1,907 posts)Right now that plan has about 8 million people in it. It does have different options on coverage. Pretty much like a company may offer different plans.
