Venezuela to withdraw from OAS, denounces campaign by Washington

Source: Reuters

Venezuela said on Wednesday it was withdrawing from the Organization of American States, deepening the diplomatic isolation of the socialist-run nation that is already out of step with Latin America's steady shift to the right.

Critics of President Nicolas Maduro have said Venezuela could be expelled from the group, accusing his government of eroding the country's democracy by delaying elections and refusing to respect the opposition-led Congress.

Venezuela said the move was a response to a Washington-backed campaign against the ruling Socialist Party that is meant to trample on the sovereignty of Venezuela, the United States' principal ideological adversary in the region.

"Tomorrow, as ordered by President Nicolas Maduro, we will present a letter of resignation from the Organization of American States, and we will begin a procedure that will take 24 months," Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez said in a televised statement.

Sortof like a Brexit although obviously the OAS is not like the more indepth structure of the EU. But it is still a body in the western hemisphere that allows this side of the world to discuss all sorts of issues including trade, etc.

The chavista regime are sore losers. They get all pissy when countries that have every right to be concerned about how they're handling their situation want to discuss what to do about it, especially since every day it's more and more apparent that they're human rights violating dictatorship.

Ironic since it was Simon Bolivar that was the first to seriously propose a pact to unite the Hispanic American nations against external powers. Nothing actually happened until more than 60 years later - in 1890 when the International Union of American Republics was formed.

it's a combination of the Peter Principle, and unbridled greed.

Maduro has no idea what the hell he's doing, and continually botches it.

While he and his cronies are sucking the country dry.

Venezuela: New regime effectively amounts to forced labour

A new decree establishing that any employee in Venezuela can be effectively made to work in the country’s fields as a way to fight the current food crisis is unlawful and effectively amounts to forced labour, said Amnesty International.

The decree, officially published earlier this week, establishes that people working in public and private companies can be called upon to join state-sponsored organizations specialized in the production of food.

They will be made to work in the new companies temporarily for a minimum of 60 days after which their “contracts” will be automatically renewed for an extra 60-day period or they will be allowed to go back to their original jobs.

“Trying to tackle Venezuela’s severe food shortages by forcing people to work the fields is like trying to fix a broken leg with a band aid,” said Erika Guevara Rosas, Americas Director at Amnesty International.

This is going to cause more and more people to flee the country.
