Lawmakers push one-week stopgap funding bill
By Jordain Carney - 04/26/17 11:26 PM EDT
Lawmakers are pushing a one-week funding bill to prevent a government shutdown as leadership continues to negotiate a larger agreement.
On Wednesday night, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.), the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, introduced the one-week bill to fund the government through May 5, predicting leadership would announce a long-term deal shortly. "This continuing resolution will continue to keep the government open and operating as normal for the next several days, in order to finalize legislation to fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year," he said in a statement. He said he expected "a final funding package will be completed soon."
Lawmakers have until Friday night to pass the short-term funding bill and prevent a shutdown. The legislation would likely need to pass through the House first, because of rules governing funding bills, before being taken up by the Senate.
Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, urged his colleagues to support the short-term legislation on Wednesday night. Weve made substantial progress on an agreement to complete the 2017 appropriations process. Lets pass this new continuing resolution, and make good use of this extra time to enact overdue legislation to provide for national defense and meet our countrys needs," he said in a statement.

Lawmakers hinted this week that they would be willing to support a short-term continuing resolution as long as its aim was to give negotiators more time to work out a larger agreement.

(129,140 posts)than getting fiscal year 2017... and we're not talking about FY18 which starts October 2017, but THIS fiscal year's (that started October 2016) appropriations approved. The fact that the current CR extended this far into the new President's term was supposed to give them time to hash it out. But toilet-tweeter in Chief had other priorities for the RW Congress.

(24,703 posts)short term spending bills, at one point in this history , or I should say a lot of times we had spending bills that lasted up to four years, if I were to tell my credit union or mortgage lender that I want to have a short term spending bill, what do you think would happen, I would not be able to get any money, this is total BS.
These Neanderthals have been in power way to long, and the world looks at this and just wonders ---------------are they really that stupid, it makes the markets unstable-----------------------
