Doctor dragged off United flight reaches settlement with airline
Source: ABC11
A Kentucky doctor who was dragged off a United flight after he refused to give up his seat to crew members has reached a settlement with the airline for an undisclosed amount.
David Dao's legal team announced the settlement Thursday in a brief statement. The agreement includes a provision that the amount will remain confidential.
Flight 3411 on April 9 from Chicago to Louisville, Kentucky, was sold out and passengers were in their seats when the airline said it needed to find room for four crew members who were commuting to their next assignment, a United Express flight in Louisville.

(38,436 posts)compliments like you have noted, wasn't cheap. And the good doctor can retire with no financial worries. ( At least that is what I think, don't know for sure)

(13,043 posts)i'm glad doc stood his ground as a paying passenger. The airline handled both the incident, the coverup, and the post-fallout horribly. This should teach them a good lesson that treating the paying public this way will be costly and damaging to their brand and pocketbook.

(51,574 posts)I'm sure Demetrio got the good doctor more than he imagined. Plus he got United to implement a lot of changes that will benefit all of us, inluding upping the top end of the bumping offer from $800 to $10,000, and "promised it will no longer use officers to forcibly remove paying customers from its flights." http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/27/news/companies/united-airlines-dao-settlement/index.html?adkey=bn

Usually you have to lose both legs or have a piece of a big building fall on you to get them to take the case

(51,574 posts)There is no way United was going to let this go to embarrassing depositions, let alone trial. The only question was how much United would pay to make Demetrio go away.

(45,465 posts)It has to be an expensive proposition for them to consider doing this again.
I bet they wish they had offered $800 or $1000 in vouchers until someone voluntarily gave up their seats.
Meanwhile, United has been in the news for abusing other passengers and killing a pet rabbit.

I hope you ROT IN HELL UNITED AIRLINES BECAUSE YOU SUCK!!!

(26,299 posts)In the future though to completely avoid it they need to set aside 4 to 8 seats for use for United personal and they wouldnt even have to lose money by doing it as they could still sale the seats with a provision that if they need to use them then the passenger who bought the seat will have to take a seat on the next available flight.

(1,443 posts)Shouldn't they be going after the TSA as well? It was the airport security that assaulted Mr. Dao, after all. Not sure if they were working for the TSA or some other agency.

(20,876 posts)Not only the airline but the man that was not even employed by United is the one that dragged him down the aisle. Fired. Uh huh ... doesn't he have a price to pay to like attempted manslaughter dare I suggest?
And yes what about TSA and all of their service people. Where were they when they were needed? Sue them too.
And not only that what about Homeland Security -- do they not have a role in this as well.
There are many more involved in this and they are covering it up with a big bucks pay-off. I suspect he got a large pay-off to shut-up.
I think he should have the lawyer sue the other parties involved as well however!

(1,443 posts)the prosecutor ought to press criminal charges against those airport security goons.
if not then Dao's lawyers should sue them in civil court.
