McCain on pre-emptive strike on North Korea: 'We have to consider that option'

Source: Politico

By CONNOR O’BRIEN 04/30/17 11:18 AM EDT

Sen. John McCain said Sunday the Trump administration should consider a pre-emptive strike against North Korea if the U.S. determines that country's regime can mount a nuclear weapon onto a ballistic missile, but cautioned military action should be last resort.

"I think that we have to consider that option as the very last option, and for a number of reasons," McCain said on CNN's "State of the Union." The Arizona Republican described ruling out possible military action as "foolish."

McCain, who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said one of the reasons for caution is the close proximity of the populous South Korean capital, Seoul, to North Korea. Should a shooting war break out, McCain said, "The carnage would be horrendous."

McCain told host Jake Tapper he didn't think Trump was considering a pre-emptive strike against the North Korean regime. McCain called on China to use its leverage over North Korea to "put the brakes on this."

Personally though I dont think Lil Kim has done anything that would warrant such a thing right now and I doubt he will because he knows if he actually would attack S. Korea or Japan with a ballistic missile that China would probably come in and remove him themselves.

I agree, re: kim's actions 'right now,' but you know what war/warlike rhetoric does, esp for 'low info voters.' I'm not sure what he knows or thinks about what China would do.

nerf missiles fall apart over the Pacific.
I don't usually like to play the race card, but you have to wonder if it'd be more prevalent in discussions if we switched South Korea and the UK? I feel bad for SK.

Imagine the irony of impeaching your PM for something America's leader does openly and daily. And then that same leader immediately ramps up tensions with the guy you're in a cowboy-esque standoff with. A leader who flagrantly flaunts that he doesn't give shit about what happens to you (merca first!), or even the liberal coastal states of his own country. And you can't get rid of this guy. Because as soon as you do you're in an all out war with a fascistic country backed by China.

WWIII came earlier than Star Trek TNG predicted.

Always a war monger. Let's bomb them and screw the consequences. It only benefits the Military Contractors who donate to Washington law makers.

To attack a country for developing weapons (but not being immediately about to use them) you already have (indeed, that you're the only country to ever have used against another) is not just ironic, it's a war crime. Plus there's the likelihood that North Korea would say that to defend itself, it has to attack South Korea.

to warrent a preemptive strike. He is just testing us. We should work with China, really push it, for China to cut off all $$ and trade to them. Kim doesn't care if his people starve to death, but he sure will care when his $$ is gone and he can't get any more.

I feel like we are in a car, driven by a lunatic, playing chicken with another lunatic, and both of them have nukes in the front seats with them. I really fear we do this, N Korea attacks Seoul and Japan, MILLIONS dead.
