Two Bexar County K-9s dead after night left inside hot cruiser
Source: KENS5 San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO -- The Bexar County Sheriff's Department says two of its K-9s have died after they were left inside a patrol vehicle overnight.
According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, the dogs were "inadvertently" left inside the vehicle overnight and died from apparent heat exposure.
The deputy responsible, identified as Deputy Steve Benoy, has been placed on administrative leave as the Animal Care Services and the BCSO investigate the incident. He was described as a 23-year veteran who has been assigned to the K-9 unit for 13 years of his career with the BCSO.
According to the statement, Benoy is "completely devastated by the tragic accident."

(112,422 posts)That would be letting the deputy off lightly considering killing a police officer is a capital offense.

(18,186 posts)I shudder to think of the charges.
I just can't wrap my mind around a 23-year veteran "forgetting" the dogs.
It makes no damned sense.

(30,817 posts)Too bad members of the public won't get the sympathy and forgiveness that I am certain will be afforded to this officer.
If I accidentally did that to my dog there would be criminal charges and my act would be featured on the local tv channel.

No, not possible. That's not "shit happening." That's being shitfaced drunk or something equally stupid.
And there should be criminal charges.

(14,881 posts)At the end of the work day, as well as the beginning. Whether they lived inside his house or in a kennel somewhere. If he was responsible then they certainly were part of his daily life and routine.
Again...he didn't notice nobody came running for food, for water, to go out to pee?

(18,186 posts)A tragedy to think how the dogs suffered, waiting for the human they trusted - probably completely.
At least they had each other in the last moments.

Dogs or children are not to be left in cars in summer.
The stupid pig!
I have mutts, always mutts w/o $20,000 dollars worth of training.
I carry spare keys & leave the a/c on w doors locked anytime I leave the vehicle & temp is over 70 deg F!!!
I have read where cops hire dimwits so they don't quit w/ all the training it takes.
This is what u get when u hire people that should be working in charitable orgs who take care of brain damaged & blind people.
This pig should loses his job, dog replacements & funeral out of his retirement pension & charged for animal cruelty.

(1,448 posts)"Inadvertent" would be driving down the highway at the speed limit in a well-maintained truck during clear conditions and sunlight, and a kid on a bike darts from a side street in front of you, and you hit the guy. That is "inadvertent". Leaving your dogs in your car, with the windows up, going into your home, having some beers, having some dinner, etc. and never thinking of your dogs, that is NOT "inadvertent".

(32,092 posts)It just pisses me off that we do have so many of these type stories. I guess part of it is just being a state with high population.
Did you know that Houston was voted coolest city in the country by Forbes magazine recently? Low cost of housing and jobs I guess ... although I will say I love this city with it's warm climate, theatre, professional sports, museums etc ...

(4,788 posts)How in the hell do you leave not one, but two, dogs in a car overnight without noticing it? Something is fishy about this story. I wonder if drugs and/or alcohol weren't to blame for the Deputy's lack of attention to detail.

(15,224 posts)I live here, and there's been a move since 2005 to get to "no kill". It is incredible the attitudes that I come across from people in this city. There are many people here who simply do not believe that animals feel, hurt, need, etc. There are regular cases of cruelty, and little justice when those cases come to court.
There are dogs chained all over this city without access to food, water or shelter. It's already been 108 degrees once this summer, and it was down to 16 degrees last winter, so weather conditions can get pretty harsh.
The pound was once killing 50,000 animals a year.
There are also many good people who are doing all that we can to move this city forward and change these attitudes, but the change is slow and I find, personally, that we get a lot of "lip service" from the bureaucrats without much action or real change. The amount of money that has been thrown at this problem is staggering, yet there never seems to be any real progress.
I cannot imagine someone leaving two, big dogs in a van for them to die. "Devastated by the tragic accident"??? Well, I reckon he should be!

(32,092 posts)BARC here in Houston is perpetually horrible. But I do agree with both you and the mayor of Houston that education is a big thing - as you say folks don't always have a very enlightened view of animals here. It's very sad.

(7,261 posts)Suffice to say that whomever is responsible needs to NEVER be in a position where they have anything to do with dogs again.
I would also like them to have even a short taste of what they put those poor creatures through, say half an hour. No doubt they would be begging for the mercy they denied their innocent helpmates.

(15,189 posts)To make a device that activates an alarm when motion is detected in a closed vehicle. It would need to eventually be able to sense life in a car, but for now motion would do. Especially with dogs.
They have cars now that the horn goes off when the tire is full of air. So it has to be possible, and not too expensive. Just an led light beam that if broken sounds the car alarm.

(1,113 posts)This officer should be charged and jailed. Not allowed to "retire", no administrative leave, no desk duty. Charged and Jailed. He killed to police dogs, he should be treated as any other criminal would be.
