Alabama executes man on eighth attempt during 35-year legal battle

Source: Associated Press

Alabama has put to death Tommy Arthur, the man who escaped seven previous execution dates for his conviction in a 1982 murder-for-hire.

Arthur, 75, was pronounced dead at 12.15am CDT on Friday at a south-west Alabama prison after a lethal injection, authorities said.

He was convicted of killing riverboat engineer Troy Wicker, who was fatally shot as he slept in his bed in the north Alabama city of Muscle Shoals.

Wicker’s wife Judy initially told police she came home and was raped by a black man who shot and killed her husband.

Says she didn't know the man and in 2009 only had vengeance on her mind.

An unidentified man walks with Judy Wicker during her 1982 trial for the murder-for-hire killing of her husband, Troy Wicker, of Muscle Shoals. Tommy Arthur was convicted of capital murder for the killing and is on death row at Holman Prison. Judy Wicker now shuns any photos or publicity about the killing.

More than 27 years after the shooting death of her husband, Judy Wicker is on a crusade to keep the man convicted of killing him in prison.

"I will die before I see him walk out of prison," she said of Thomas Douglas Arthur's latest attempts to be released from death row.

This original story behind this execution is so sordid and pathetic. What a bunch of messed up people.

Both the killer and the conspirator in a murder-for-hire scheme should be in prison for life, no parole.
