Homeland Security Considers Laptop Ban for All Flights In and Out of the U.S.

Source: Slate

Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly said he “might” move to ban laptops in carry-on luggage from all international flights. “There's a real threat—numerous threats against aviation,” Kelly said on Fox News Sunday. “That's really the thing that they are obsessed with, the terrorists, the idea of knocking down an airplane in flight, particularly if it's a U.S. carrier, particularly if it's full of mostly U.S. folks.” Regardless of whether laptops are banned in cabins, the United States is planning to “raise the bar” on security and improve screening of carry-on luggage.

“We are still following the intelligence," Kelly said, "and are in the process of defining this, but we're going to raise the bar generally speaking for aviation much higher than it is now.” In March, the Trump administration banned large electronic devices in cabins on flights from 10 airports, mostly in the Middle East. The ban, which requires any electronic devices larger than a smartphone to be checked-in, currently applies to non-stop flights to the United States from Amman, Jordan; Kuwait City, Kuwait; Cairo; Istanbul; Jeddah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Casablanca, Morocco; Doha, Qatar; and Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

I don't get it. If laptops are banned from carryons, will they be allowed on checked baggage? And if they contain a bomb, then what difference does it make if it explodes in the cabin or in the cargo area?

Where, for $179 annually: you may check your electronic devices onto flights with a secure data scan of it's contents*.

I've declared a moratorium on flying anyway. Until the airlines are re-regulated and considered a utility, we will be treated like cattle, have pathetically narrow seats, too little legroom, and get nickel and dimed to death. And now, they are really treating people like shit. So, nope, they don't need my money.

I'm fucking done with that. No more flying for old Pat. Fuck 'em.

Cannot believe that people put up with rapidly increasingly demeaning and brutal tactics by the airlines.
Calling police to assault paying passengers is routine now....other airlines besides United do it.

And we the public pay for it all, including TSA.

***TSA receives funding from three streams: 1) passengers pay a “9/11 Passenger Security Fee,” a ticket tax of $2.50 per flight segment with a maximum of $10 per round trip; 2) carriers pay an Aviation Security Infrastructure Fee, based on year 2000 domestic screening costs; and 3) TSA also receives direct taxpayer support. Of the sectors overseen by TSA (including rail and pipelines), however, only airlines and their customers pay special taxes for its support.***

search, MRI and xray before they fly and then make them fly naked and force all baggage to be transported via separate non passenger carrying airplanes.
What this is really about I think is using FUD to control and manipulate us.

the lady took it out of my luggage and said " What are you doing with this? This could kill someone." I told her " It was not in my carry on bag it's in the cargo luggage. I wanted a decent hammer and the ones they sell in the shops overseas are crappy." She said " Well you can't take it without special permission." I told her " I guess you guys don't think someone could kill people with a ball point pen then. Go ahead and keep the hammer I'm not standing in line for special permission."

From what I've read, there is a difference.

A terrorist bringing a small explosive device, that has been disguised in an electronic device like a laptop ... needs to be placed against the wall of the airplane, to be able to blow a large enough hole to cause structural failure. The same device in the luggage hold could not be guaranteed to cause enough damage to accomplish that.

I hear they are close to developing explosive cloth that can't be detected.
Soon everyone will have to fly naked.
