DONALD TRUMP SET TO REVERSE BARACK OBAMA'S POLICIES ON CUBA

Source: Newsweek

BY HARRIET SINCLAIR ON 5/29/17 AT 5:26 PM

President Donald Trump is mulling a reversal of Cuba policies enacted by former president Barack Obama that soften the U.S.’ stance towards the country, including the rescinding of the ‘wet foot, dry foot’ immigration policy.

According to two sources quoted by the Daily Caller, the Republican has been intending to roll back the Cuba policies signed by Obama in January for some time, and is likely to take a tougher line on Cuba.

“The Trump Administration has been ‘ready’ since February 2017 to announce changes, but issues unrelated to Cuba have intervened,” John Kavulich, from the U.S.-Cuba Trade and Economic Council, told the Daily Caller.

Kavulich told the publication he believes the president will look at an “increased enforcement relating to travel,” and “a focus upon discouraging transactions with entities controlled by the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) of the Republic of Cuba.”

Any more than Mexicans or Russians are free to immigrate as they wish. For evidence that this is not the case, just consider the sheer number of "undocumented citizens". (Thus I heard one local politician put it in objecting to Trump and trying to portray new services intended to make our city welcoming--she described newly arriving undocumented as our "newest American citizens" and the new services as intended to make "undocumented citizens" settle in. Sorry, it's hard to parody politicians when they do such a good job of it on their own. Somehow she missed the entire naturalization process and that resident =/= citizen.)

There's a long list of ceilings for various groups. Family members get first priority; then employees, based on what skills are needed--burger flippers, varenniki makers, and landscape maintenance crews are not priorities. There are ceilings on how many can come from a single country, and diversity preferences for low-immigration countries. Refugees form part of this group.

The total number of immigrants per year is something like 675k. There's a long waiting list and it can take years to get advanced enough to be in the top 675k.

Add in 100k refugees from SW Asia, and you reduce the number that can enter due to family ties or from other countries by 100k. For every Cuban that enters, somebody from another country is bumped down to next year's list. Every non-citizen GI that gets preferential status likewise bumps somebody. It's a zero-sum game. If Person A from off the list gets added to this year's quota, person #675000 becomes #675001 and is told to check back next year.

I was thinking of the staggering amounts of money to be made in Cuban tourism ventures; businesses that one would think would be right up Trump's alley: hotels, golf courses, restaurants, resorts, casinos, etc.

The piratical CEO's of Wall Street are just going to kiss all that opportunity goodbye?

37. 2016: HOW DONALD TRUMPS COMPANY VIOLATED THE UNITED STATES EMBARGO AGAINST CUBA
Tue May 30, 2017, 01:09 AM
May 2017

BY KURT EICHENWALD ON 9/29/16 AT 5:42 AM

Updated | A company controlled by Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, secretly conducted business in Communist Cuba during Fidel Castro’s presidency despite strict American trade bans that made such undertakings illegal, according to interviews with former Trump executives, internal company records and court filings.

Documents show that the Trump company spent a minimum of $68,000 for its 1998 foray into Cuba at a time when the corporate expenditure of even a penny in the Caribbean country was prohibited without U.S. government approval. But the company did not spend the money directly. Instead, with Trump’s knowledge, executives funneled the cash for the Cuba trip through an American consulting firm called Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. Once the business consultants traveled to the island and incurred the expenses for the venture, Seven Arrows instructed senior officers with Trump’s company—then called Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts—how to make it appear legal by linking it after the fact to a charitable effort.

The payment by Trump Hotels came just before the New York business mogul launched his first bid for the White House, seeking the nomination of the Reform Party. On his first day of the campaign, he traveled to Miami, where he spoke to a group of Cuban-Americans, a critical voting bloc in the swing state. Trump vowed to maintain the embargo and never spend his or his companies’ money in Cuba until Fidel Castro was removed from power. He did not disclose that, seven months earlier, Trump Hotels already had reimbursed its consultants for the money they spent on their secret business trip to Havana.

If Trump wants to stop basing foreign policy on human rights concerns, why is he knuckling under to Cuba hardliners?

Less than a year after America and Cuba formally reopened diplomatic ties and relaxed many conditions of the ongoing economic embargo, President Donald Trump will reportedly call an end to the United States’ new beginning with its closest communist neighbor.

The move is out of step with Trump’s broader commitment to reorienting American foreign policy around hard-edged economic and security interests, as opposed to seeking to export democratic values. Re-freezing the newly thawed cultural and economic portal between the countries makes sense only as a means to punish Cuban dictator Raul Castro’s regime for failing to allow a free and open society to prevail on the island.

Though Trump himself had reportedly explored business and hotel deals in Cuba, his campaign seemed to take its cues from Florida congressional delegation hardliners like Sen. Marco Rubio (R) and Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R). Cuba-watchers had therefore braced for an abrupt reversal of President Barack Obama’s diplomatic overtures.

The whiplash speed of Trump’s own reversal makes it hard to predict exactly what form this new policy will take, Florida International University professor and Cuba expert Frank Mora told ThinkProgress.
