GOP Rep. Trusts God With Climate Change: 'He Can Take Care Of It'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published JUNE 1, 2017 9:45 AM

A Republican congressman said last week that, were the impacts of climate change to become a “real problem,” God would intervene.

“I believe there’s climate change,” Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI) told constituents at a town hall Friday, as seen in a video of the event posted online. “I believe there’s been climate change since the beginning of time. I think there are cycles.”

“Do I think that man has some impact? Yeah, of course,” he continued. “Can man change the entire universe? No. Why do I believe that? As a Christian, I believe that there is a creator, God, who’s much bigger than us. And I’m confident that, if there’s a real problem, he can take care of it.”

President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter Wednesday that he would announce whether the United States would stay in the Paris climate accord, a landmark agreement reached between nearly every nation on Earth in 2016 to collectively curb emissions.

A man was trapped on his roof with the waters rising steadily.
A rescue boat came and he refused the help.
"I don't need you. God will take care of me."

The rains continued and the water continued to rise.
Another rescue boat came and he refused the help.
"I don't need you. God will take care of me."

The rains continued and the water continued to rise.
The man drowned.

When he met God he asked, "Why didn't you take care of me?"

God replied, "I sent two boats, how many chances do you need?"

The God in your favorite book tends to "take care of" things by destroying the towns where they're happening. I understand the average Christian's life is so terrible he wants to die tonight so he can go to this magical place you guys keep talking about...but the sane people don't have a death wish like you do so please, can we fix the damn problem in a way that doesn't involve everyone getting killed by your malevolent imaginary friend?

Mankind has an imperative to be good stewards of creation.

'They' make me so very ill!

These are also under God's judgment, but they're evidently deceived and too full of vain-glory to 'see'. They pass over the admonition that "the 'elect' will be judged more harshly". Which includes those so-called preachers of the 'word'. That verse doesn't apply to them, of course.

Christianity started out in its inception pretty okay, not adulterated in the manner in which it has evolved in certain circles, which shall remain nameless.

I've been witness to people who are of no 'organized' faith system who were more exemplary models of the 'Way' than some in their hypocritical 'church' of four walls.

Please don't shout me down. (Don't banish me to the Christian forum.)

Yeah ima Christ follower, altho' trying not to run into the ditch daily.

When Climate Change does even more damage, and we ask God why, he'll answer, "Well, I sent you that agreement among all the super powers on earth to stop or slow it, but you made a different choice."

The Christian religion is all about personal choice. That's what it's based on. You get salvation when you make the right choices. They say God set up so that people HAVE to make personal choices.

God helps those who help themselves.

God's answer is not always, "Let me do this for you." The answer is often to give you the opportunity or tools to resolve the problem yourself. It's then up to YOU to do it.

...and the end result would be me being as stupid as Tim Walberg and those who believe as he does.

Dear Mr Walberg,

Your belief is not the same as fact. Never has been and never will be - and no amount of crying over non-existent persecution will change that fact. If your god gave you sense enough to come out of the rain, then surely said god gave you sense enough to know that faith that something is true does not make it true, and belief - no matter how sincere - isn't fact. Unless your religion requires you to dismiss fact to preserve its own existence. Does your god demand that of you? Because if your god expects that of you, then the problem is easily remedied. If you really want to save the human consciousness you call a soul, start by saving life on this planet. Start by taking responsibility. Start by actually doing good instead of harm.

You've taken your faith and belief in an unseen god and inserted it into the lives of people through the trickle-down, "invisible hand of the free-market" - then you extrapolated that belief across the board - encompassing the whole of human need - and turning those needs into a cost benefit analysis. You've exchanged your biblical prophets for the profits of your true god - money.

You dress up your philosophy of self-interest in religion and patriotism. You call it the "American way of life". You pretend your actions as a person and a lawmaker don't matter because - it can all be laid at the feet of some god. There is no easier way out to be found.

You aren't alone in this and you most certainly aren't the first. But those that came before you were wrong and you're wrong, too.

Just wanted to tell you this.

GM-PM. aka Solly Mack

Reminds me of the joke about the flood and the guy who kept praying for God's help. A boat shows up and tell him to get aboard, but the guys says he is waiting for God's help, and that boat looks like it might sink. So a helicopter shows up and sends down a basket. "Get in the basket" says the helicopter crew. "No, God will save me" says the man who is now on top of his house and the water lapping at his feet. Soon he drowns and goes to heaven where he asks God: "Why didn't you save me, Lord? I had faith" and God says, I sent you a boat, I sent you a helicopter, what more did you want?"
