Animal abuse registry similar to sex offenders list introduced by growing number of US states

Studies show people who are cruel to animals are more likely to enact violence against people

A growing number of US states and counties are taking action against people who abuse animals by listing their names on an official registry, similar to the way sex offenders’ details are stored.

The measures aim to protect the welfare of animals by allowing pet shops and shelters to check prospective owners are not on the registry. They also provide a way to vet pet-sitters and those seeking to buy an animal from another person.

A wider law enforcement motivation is also behind the registries, as studies have shown people who are cruel to animals are more likely to enact violent crime against people.

Tennessee was the first state to introduce a registry in January 2016, following the lead of a small number of regions in New York state, including New York City, and one area in Illinois.

I hope this becomes a nation wide registry. At least national chain stores can all have copies, even pet adoption events by PetSmart, etc can have these lists at the events.

The greatest would be pounds, rescue agencies, and animal shelters. This would be a great opportunity for shelter to have stricter adoption regulations.

Torture one animal and millions of people are outraged. Torture billions of animals few people are outraged.

It drives me crazy when people talk about how awful it is that someone killed an animal hunting yet raise no concern about the billions of animals that are tortured and killed every year in US factory farms.

If one castigates (rightly) a big game hunter, one should consider what is happening daily to chickens, pigs, and cows across this country and whether or not one is contributing to that killing and torture via their dietary choices.

"Animals raised on modern factory farms and killed in slaughterhouses endure almost unimaginable suffering. I hope that once you see the routine cruelty involved in raising, transporting, and killing animals for food, you will join the millions of people who've decided to leave meat off their plates for good."

That quote's from this video he narrates about the real truth most people don't even know about:
http://www.meat.org

Link to the transcript: http://www.newsofinterest.tv/video_pages_flash/politics/vegetarian/slaughterhouse_glass_walls.php

While the factory farming industry tries to hide the truth, people complacently close their eyes to it, as well as to the devastating effect US factory farming has on global warming through various types of intense pollution, significant rainforest deforestation, etc.

I was surprised to see TN leading on this type of legislation. But who will decide who will be on the list? Will it require an actual conviction?

If someone has been arrested and/or convicted for abuse of people they should also not be allowed to get animals. If they have abused people it is very highly likely they have done it to animals or would do it. The results of these studies have been around for many many years so why something has not been done until now completely baffles me. Well, it is a start.

also studies/stats have shown more violence in communities around animal abusive industries like slaughterhouses, factory farms and plenty of other businesses that abuse animals as part of their 'process'.

I always wonder/worry about Americas abused humans as well. millions of people locked up for decades in USA prisons. Some of those guards are so violent and abusive at work. They go home every night.

IMO-all abusive "jobs" fear 24/7 cameras, all of them.

p/s soon as todays republicans see this news they'll make it a crime to list peoples names. Just like they made it a crime for employees to record animal cruelty in dairies/farms.
