British police identify 3rd London attacker as Italian of Moroccan descent

Source: Washington Post

By Karla Adam and Griff Witte June 6 at 8:29 AM

LONDON — British police on Tuesday named the third London Bridge attacker as 22-year-old Youssef Zaghba from east London, offering further suggestions that the plot was hatched locally even as questions were raised about gaps in counterterrorism surveillance.

Zaghba, described as an Italian national of Moroccan descent, was “not a police or MI5 subject of interest,” the police said in a statement.

But the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported that Italian intelligence had tipped off their British counterparts about Zaghba’s presence and frequent travels. The paper said he tried to go to Syria last year via Bologna.

There were already questions about how one of the attackers, Khuram Shazad Butt, apparently eluded police despite being on a watch list.

What should terrify everybody is the fact that it really wouldn't surprise anybody that much.
