Four top law firms turned down requests to represent Trump

Top lawyers with at least four major law firms rebuffed White House overtures to represent President Trump in the Russia investigations, in part over concerns that the president would be unwilling to listen to their advice, according to five sources familiar with discussions about the matter.
The unwillingness of some of the countrys most prestigious attorneys and their law firms to represent Trump has complicated the administrations efforts to mount a coherent defense strategy to deal with probes being conducted by four congressional committees as well as Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller.
The presidents chief lawyer now in charge of the case is Marc E. Kasowitz, a tough New York civil litigator who for years has aggressively represented Trump in multiple business and public relations disputes often with threats of countersuits and menacing public statements but who has little experience dealing with complex congressional and Justice Department investigations that are inevitably influenced by media coverage and public opinion.

Among them, sources said, were some of the most high-profile names in the legal profession, including Brendan Sullivan of Williams & Connolly; Ted Olson of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Paul Clement and Mark Filip of Kirkland & Ellis; and Robert Giuffra of Sullivan & Cromwell.................................................

I am glad to see Ted Olson turn Trump down.

Probably the reason he doesn't have a true physician.

(17,006 posts)These firms have already made their reputation. Taking on Twitler wouldn't help them and could definitely hurt them because, as cited, he doesn't follow directions.

Trump is too much of an egotist to ask a law firm up front to take him on as a pro-bono client, but if his past business record is any indication, that's what he'd end up being, after refusing to pay their bills ("so sue me!" . I wouldn't take his IOU for a Big Mac, although, from the looks of him these days, SOMEBODY obviously does.

(115,735 posts)He doesn't listen to his lawyers' advice; says stupid things in public; and doesn't pay - not to mention that any law firm that represents him would probably lose other, more respectable clients and its reputation would take a serious hit.
I can see Trump with a lawyer like "Saul Goodman" - a guy with a lot of bling and no ethics - and no reputation to protect.

WHY DIDN'T PEOPLE LISTEN TO ALL THE FOLKS--BIOGRAPHERS, CONTRACTORS, FORMER TAX ATTORNEYS, ETC--WHO CAME FORWARD TO WARN US ABOUT WHO THIS GUY IS??

(7,188 posts)Paul Clement was at King & Spaulding and they were defending the Defense of Marriage Act - K&S decided they didn't want to defend it any longer - Paul left there and joined the conservative Bancroft PLLC. Last fall Kirkland acquired the firm and he doesn't have that ability anymore - and probably doesn't want to leave K&E although I figured there was at least a 50/50 chance Clement might do so.
I read that Jones Day was close to this president - the WH counsel McGahn is from there as are other lawyers in the WH.
McGahn is more of a campaign finance lawyer - not really a constitutional lawyer. Don't know if any JD lawyers would step in.
Wonder if Alan Dershowitz would join the team if asked. He seems very "helpful" to Trump on cable news. Like he is angling to be part of the team.
