Once it was a dairy farm. Then a muddy, trash-filled field.
Now, the site of the most famous rock concert ever is being recognized for its place in history.
The site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Festival has been named to the state and national registers of historic places.

(13,871 posts)Back then FM was more "underground"-very few commercials and 10 minute jam songs were common. It was a wild and fun time.

(34,195 posts)I was living and working in Hartford, CT, and rooming with four other college age guys.
I didn't have a clue what Woodstock was all about at the time (until I later saw the movie).
The lady I later met, and then married in '77 had gone with friends.
Someone passed around a bottle of water, and turned out to have LSD in it.
Says she was messed up for a day.
Who knows.

Somewhere Miriam and Max Yasgur are smiling! (Miriam wrote me a nice reply to my thank you note to them for hosting the event.)

(14,014 posts)a while back and THREE of us realized we'd been there. I was there with my 14 year old girlfriend (I was older, at 16 years) , this other guy was there with the Hog Farm folks feeding the performers (!) and the third guy said he showed up with his ticket, having HIKED there. He said he looked around at all the freaks and hippies, and said to himself Nope. Not for me. And walked away. He went on to express how he really regretted that decision, while the two of us tried to soften his disappointment by saying that, you know, it was not really that great after all...
The music WAS kinda hard to hear above the din of the hard rain pounding on the plastic poncho. It really wasn't till we later saw the movie that we could say we "heard" all these great groups perform!
