Mosul battle: IS kills 230 fleeing civilians, says UN

Source: BBC

The UN has received reports that 231 Iraqi civilians have been killed by so-called Islamic State while attempting to flee Mosul over the past two weeks.

At least 204 are believed to have been shot dead by militants during clashes with Iraqi security forces in the Shifa district last Thursday and Saturday.

The UN said it had noted a "significant escalation" in such killings.

There are also reports of between 50 and 80 civilians being killed in an air strike on the Zanjili area on 31 May.

this should be a front page international story full of outrage by the world...... but I don't hear anyone talking about it. Unbelievable. You just think --- imagine if that many civilians were killed in Europe or America or anywhere else in the world besides the Middle East.......

what a world.

stronghold since 2014. It has been a nightmare over that entire time period. Fortunately, there are no similar places in Europe of the United States. The fight against ISIS has been in the news for almost 3 years.

It was well covered when ISIS swiftly moved to take control of a huge swatch of Iraq and Syria. There was less coverage when Obama/Kerry created a 68 nation coalition that has worked with Iraq and the Kurds and some Syrian Arabs to take back land, demine it and restore governance. By the time Trump became President, almost all Iraqi land, other than the western half of Mosul was taken back from ISIS. On the Syrian side the Syrian civil war has made things far more complicated, but even there ISIS is losing land mostly to the Kurds. This was SO badly covered that Trump has said that HE has pulled together more support to fight this. In fact, there has been not big change.

As to elsewhere besides the Middle east - try Africa, where in Sudan, Congo, and Somalia, to name just three of many - there has been this level of killing and it makes even less news. I would stop with North America and most of Europe.
