Kris Kobach to run for Kansas governor
Source: Wichita Eagle
LENEXA -- Kris Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state who has gained a national reputation advocating for tough immigration enforcement and voter identification laws, is running for governor.
Kobach launched his campaign Thursday, decrying a culture of corruption in Topeka and slamming the tax increase lawmakers forced into law earlier this week over Gov. Sam Brownbacks veto that is intended to raise $1.2 billion over the next two years. He vowed to slash spending through the attrition of retiring state workers and cutting off welfare benefits to undocumented immigrants.
Kobach is the most prominent Republican to jump into the 2018 race for governor so far. He had been saying for months he was weighing a run and in recent weeks ruled out taking a position in President Donald Trumps administration. He offers voters a firebrand conservative option in the Republican primary. Kobach has proven a lightning rod, both in Kansas and nationwide.
Kansas government is bloated, Kobach said, adding that he was ashamed that Republicans had supported the tax increases.

(9,808 posts)Kansas is losing population, with significant brain drain. Parents are having to choose between homeschooling their kids or sending them by bus 2 hours away every day because the rural school spending means districts are having to close and consolidate schools. Counties can't afford to maintain farm to market roads, so they're reverting to gravel. Rural fire departments were never well funded, but much of the plains are a lightning strike from firestorm.
You can see the line, crossing at Goodland on I70. Eastern Colorado is empty and rural, but it's not dying.

(27,813 posts)At least the legislature finally pushed back - in the meantime, Brownback is signing nonsensical bills putting up ridiculous roadblocks to abortion.
We have always had a spare bedroom listed with several reproductive rights organizations, since I live relatively close to the Boulder clinics that can do later term abortions, and women coming from Wyoming and Kansas may need a safe, supportive, private place to crash for free. We used to only get a call once or twice a year. For the past year, it's been more like 3-5 times a year.
And I'm hearing from my plains in-state students that there's a significant number of Kansas parents sending their high school age kids to cousins and aunts and uncles across the border to Colorado for school. I'm glad the kids are here, and we can afford to educate them, but no parent should have to make that decision.
I know Kansas can fix this - they're not stupid and they're angry - but I pray that Brownback's vision of hell opens up just long enough to claim him for all the cruelty he's visited on people.

(27,813 posts)No, no parent should have to do that, and no caring government should be dividing families.

(111,277 posts)but even if he gets in, he'll have an uphill battle to roll back the tax increases. Brownback had the whole damned state starting to shut down, amenities disappearing and services following close behind. Kansans are not in a mood to welcome a whiplash return to making the Kochs richer at their expense.

(10,500 posts)Secretary of State it.
You might expect people from various places to know the governors of other states, even far away states.
But I cannot think of any other Secretary of State who I can identify by name if someone asks me: "Who is the Secretary of State of (fill in the blank).
Kobach is frightening man. Can you imagine if he ever became president? I am sure that he wants to run some day.

(6,931 posts)Public schools so starved for cash they were going close early next year but since that ZERO tax rate for Corporations was rolled back they should be able to do a full year. KDOT cancels bids in Jan for work that could have been done in summer. But much better to bust up the front end of your car on crap roads and then take it to a repairs shop that pays ZERO State income tax.
That POS nor ANY Republican doesn't need to be Gov of this State for YEARS until we can repair the Brownback disaster.

(10,500 posts)He certainly seems to have it in him to do the job. He is Donald Trump's go to guy when he wants to claim that 3-5 million people voted illegally.

(17,390 posts)...in a State that already is heavily white. That is his claim to fame. He suppresses what little minority vote there is in Kansas to begin with. Trump is not the cause of systemic Republican racism, but a symptom of it.

(10,500 posts)He, or someone like him, is the inevitable end result of the road that the GOP has taken us down.
However, I think it is safe to predict that Kobach will emerge as an anti-choice crusader, both on the campaign trail and during his tenure as governor, assuming he is elected.
As I wrote above, Kobach is a good bet for future dictator of America. I worry that just as we say that Goldwater paved the way for Reagan, someday we will be saying that Trump paved the way for Kobach.
