Reports: 'Multiple shooting' at congressional baseball game practice field

Source: The Hill

A shooting was reported early Wednesday at a congressional baseball game practice field in Alexandria, Va.

A reporter from the Huffington Post tweeted that a congressman said he "heard there was a shooting at the Congressional baseball game practice field."

ABC 7 News reported "multiple shooting" in the 400 block of E. Monroe Street.

The suspected is "believed in custody," ABC reported, according to Alexandria police.

Wed Jun 14, 2017, 08:08 AM
Jun 2017

New reports are coming in of a shooting occurring at a YMCA baseball field where GOP Congresspeople were playing in Del Ray, Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. The first tweet about the incident came from Benjamin Childers, a witness to the incident who has an apartment overlooking the baseball fields.

Childers also began a live broadcast following the incident, stating that he had 3 Congressional members sheltering inside his apartment as he filmed from his window. According to ABC7, there are multiple injuries and one person has been flown to a nearby hospital.

But maybe this.

I know, I know, thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers, this is not the time to talk about such things.

ALERT: APD investigating multiple shooting 400 block E Monroe St. Suspect believed in custody. Stay from area, let emergency vehicles thru.

I just posted the story at the Scan-DC (scanner enthusiasts) listserv and then turned my computer off, unaware that the shooting involved some high-profile individuals. Then the news hit TV.

It's actually Monroe Avenue, not Monroe Street.

The shooting was at the Eugene Simpson baseball field. It's used by Little League, T. C. Williams High School, and so forth.

The weather today is going to be hazy, hot, and humid, so the members of congress were getting in practice for their baseball game early in the day. By the time the weather got bad, they'd be back at the Capitol.

The usual policy is to take victims of gunshot wounds to the Washington Hospital Center (WHC), as INOVA Alexandria is not set up to handle this level of trauma. WHC has a blue and yellow helicopter. It's a frequent flyer around here. A Park Police helicopter was here too, as well as a third one, which could belong to Fairfax County or the Virginia State Police. I've been watching one helicopter through binoculars.

There's a lot of room to land a helicopter nearby and still stay away from the light towers lining the two baseball fields at the Simpson facility.

EDIT: Scalise was taken to George Washington University Hospital. That's where Reagan was taken.

EDITED AGAIN, 8:11 p.m.: No, he wasn't. Scalise was taken to the WHC. The shooter was taken to GWU Hospital. Information has been changing throughout the day.

I walk and bike through the neighborhood all the time. There's an ALDI across the street where I shop.

Emergency vehicles galore responded, including the APD's olive drab SWAT vehicle. There are three Alexandria Fire Department stations nearby. One is Station 202, the old Potomac station, on Windsor Avenue in Del Ray. There's one on Powhatan Street, and there's a brand new one in Potomac Yards. Several EMS units would have been at the scene of the shooting in no time.

Sean Spicer lives in Alexandria, so he knows where the shooting took place.

They will never admit we have a problem of white male terrorists becoming radicalized to murder Americans on US soil.

Then Trump will send out some smug tweets about how when the London terrorists used knives and trucks, no one called for gun control. But when GOP congressmen get shot with guns, the solution is obviously for more people to have more guns.

Scalise said to be stable at GWU hospital.

Alexandria schools on lockdown.

Suspected shooter said to be a white male with a long gun and lots of ammo, probably a deliberate act.

Expect to see more security downtown in DC.

Prez and VP issuing thoughts and prayers.

Edit: Lots of streets shut down in Del Ray area. Cars being advised to use GW parkway or King Street.

49. Congressman Details Hectic Moment Under Fire: We Were Sitting Ducks; Gun Saved Our Lives
Wed Jun 14, 2017, 09:13 AM
Jun 2017

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (WWJ) – A Michigan representative who survived a gun attack during a congressional baseball practice Wednesday morning in Virginia is detailing the harrowing moments the gunman opened fire.

Michigan Rep. Mike Bishop tells WWJ Newsradio 950 he was attending the practice around 5:30 a.m., just outside of Alexandria, when shots rang out. He said he and his colleagues were “sitting ducks.”

“As we were standing here this morning, a gunman walked up to the fence line and just began to shoot. I was standing at home plate and he was in the third base line,” Bishop said. “He had a rifle that was clearly meant for the job of taking people out, multiple casualties, and he had several rounds and magazines that he kept unloading and reloading.”

The shooting went on for roughly 10 minutes, with some accounts putting the number of shots fired around 100. Four people were injured, including two Capitol Hill police officers and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Louisiana. The suspect was also shot.

“The only reason why any of us walked out of this thing, by the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover.

We were inside the backstop and if we didn’t have that cover by a brave person who stood up and took a shot themselves, we would not have gotten out of there and every one of us would have been hit — every single one of us,” said Bishop. “He was coming around the fence line and he was looking for all of us who had found cover in different spots. But if we didn’t have return fire right there, he would have come up to each one of us and shot us point-blank.”

With the age bracket mentioned of the shooter, I fear it is someone about to lose their healthcare and livelihood. People in my age group are fearful and uncertain in ways I've never seen before.

I pray for the people involved. I do not condone any violence, and I hope and pray to be wrong about the shooter's motives. But people are becoming desperate. That's not an excuse. But it is a fact.

when one witness described the shooter as an overweight man in his mid 50's to early 60's. No excuse, but there probably are a lot of angry people in that age group who fear losing their health insurance, and be charged up the wazoo for pre-existing conditions.

Is being overweight considered a pre-existing condition? But then it could be a Trump crazy looking to blame it on Democrats.

In some ways that narrative is not as bad as some of the alternatives. A targeted assassination attempt on the Majority Whip would be more serious for example - especially one supported by some larger organization.

QUOTE ""Maybe next tax day

I’m still convinced that the major change that we all need to push for is a change in the federal tax code. We need more brackets to reach all classes of people.

We need a much higher bracket that actually reaches into the rich and super-rich incomes. I wish everyone would check out taxfoundation.org, so they could see for themselves and not just believe me as to how the leaders of the past reached all classes of income. They would like you to think that there is a lower class, middle class, and upper class. This is just not so.

In 1938 we had 33 tax brackets to reach all classes of income. These brackets ranged from 4 percent for income up to $64,000 (adjusted for inflation), all the way up to 79 percent for income over $79 million.

If we had anything close to the way our great leaders of the past set up the tax code, we could eliminate 90 percent of the country’s problems, pay down the debt and get the country back in the black in no time.

The income inequality of the 1920s was a major contributor of the Great Depression, and if we don’t raise the tax brackets to reach the rich we will never get out of this Great Recession.

I would wish all people under an annual income of $1 million to get behind the 99 percent, and back the push for tax reform. My motto is: “Tax em like 1938.”

God bless the 99 percent."""end quote
