Oregon first US state to add third gender option on driver ID

Source: BBC

Beginning in July, Oregon residents who do not identify as male or female can mark X for sex on driver's licences, learner's permits and state IDs.

The state's Transportation Commission approved the new rule, which was hailed by LGBTQ rights groups.

The shift comes a year after an Oregon judge ruled a retired Army veteran could legally identify as non-binary.

The June 2016 landmark decision allowed Jamie Shupe to change her gender to non-binary, which refers to gender identities that do not fall into the binary categories of male and female. It was believed to be the first decision of its kind in the US.

11. No, they just gamed the requirement by specifying a 3rd option

But it still doesn't answer the question of why should it be required at all when it serves no useful purpose.

Just because something has always been done doesn't justify why it needs to continue. Any system of control which can't continuously justify itself should be dismantled.

When obtaining an ID.

It just seems reasonable to have gender listed, if for no other reason to make things easier for people who card the public.

14. True freedom means not being forced to comply with a requirement that makes no sense

How can such data make things any easier on anyone? It's useless information. The requirement becomes particularly insidious when you consider some states are going to use that information to arbitrarily discriminate against those who may identify differently than what's listed on their birth certificate.
