Trump aide says White House will privately negotiate tax overhaul

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The White House plans to privately negotiate a massive overhaul of the tax system with Republican leaders in Congress, possibly giving rank-and-file members little if any say over the finished product, a top aide to President Donald Trump said Tuesday.

Gary Cohn, Trump’s top economic aide, said the administration doesn’t want to engage in prolonged negotiations after the package is made public this fall. Cohn said the goal is to release the overhaul in the first two weeks of September.

“We don’t want to be negotiating the tax bill on the floor,” Cohn said at a meeting of technology executives.

This type of top-down approach has a sketchy record on Capitol Hill, especially on issues as difficult to maneuver as the first remake of the nation’s tax code in 31 years. Earlier this year, House members balked when Trump officials demanded that they vote on a bill to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s health law.

He's trying to put together a bill so bad no congressman will vote for it out of fear for his seat. So, he's going to cobble together a cram-down bill and push it through CONgress the way Shrub pushed the PATRIOT Act through: Vote for this, with no amendments, or we will end your political career.

BTW how hard is it to write a bill of impeachment?

...by giving most elected reps no say in what the bill contains.

I'm sure telling all the reps and senators to butt out when they all have their own state interests to represent is going to go over real well.

2016. The coup was completed on that day. It didn't take effect until January 21, 2017 but that was only a formality. I hope Canada doesn't build their wall on the border until after I get across.

who chooses to do things (major things!) behind my back and without my knowledge of what is going on. Not that I would every really expect to be united with someone who thinks being rich is all life is about and is so sexist and tries to push religion at me, but that word is in the name of this country.

I think this may be part of the appeal to Trumpsters. They don't want to have to think about things like taxes and health care because they are hard (lol) and they just want to blindly give control of it all to the Republicans. They don't even seem to notice how awful it is for them. They see the guys waving the flags and talking about the Bible so they think it all must be okay!

Not much to worry about, since this won't go anywhere.

The House of Representatives is the only legislative body that can write tax bills. Unless Cheeto plans on amending the Constitution, and that would probably take 10 years to get ratified. More time than he has in office.
