Dean Heller of Nevada becomes fifth GOP senator to come out against health-care bill

Source: Washington Post

Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.) said Friday that he cannot support Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s health-care bill without changes to it, becoming the fifth GOP senator to take that position since the bill was released on Thursday.

Heller, who is up for reelection in 2018, has expressed concerns about the way the measure addresses the future of Medicaid. The proposal would impose long-term federal spending cuts on the program.

“I cannot support a piece of legislation that takes away insurance from tens of millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Nevadans,” Heller said in a news conference held in his home state.

Nevada, like most states, expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

Forget the other 4. Possibly this guy + Murkowski + Portman. That's all one would need to kill this in the form it's in right now (more would be helpful but...).

Heller is up for re-election and we know that NV went blue and was successfully able to replace Reid with another Democrat.

You know, they love the limelight, these politicians. Rand Paul is enjoying his moment in the sun.

If he sees they have the votes to pass it, he'll stick to his guns. He's an Ann Raynd devotee and will seriously consider not voting for anything that gives subsidies to poor people. He doesn't even believe in civil rights...it should be legal to discriminate, if it's what people want to do.

What is he going to do when he gets back to DC and Congressional rethugs start working on him?

Saw pundit on tv explaining...once Medicaid is cut, even if it's to be partially cut for upcoming years, once it's cut, the states will start shutting it down, since it's being gutted.

Just like if you found out your cable company is shutting its doors a year from now, you probably wouldn't wait a year to shop for a new one. Many would switch now.

Medicaid picks up all or part of the cost. Medicare does NOT pay for nursing homes if you're old.

Medicaid is the service that pays for home assistance a few hours a week, if you can live alone in your house, with a little occasional help. Otherwise, you would have to be institutionalized, so it's much cheaper to have home assistance a few hours a week.

Cruel bill. The Republicans just don't care. They really do not care.

He and Collins came out with their own plan -- a plan to actually help fix the ACA rather than be death to everyone. Everything he has said indicates he won't support this bill, and the Medicaid rollback would cost 400,000 people in his state healthcare (10% of the state) -- and that's without even getting into the cuts to Medicaid.

I don't know if he will have the guts to stand up to the party, as this is his first term, but I wouldn't be shocked. Us in Indivisible LA is working hard.

There'll be more Republican screwups by then, if they retain the Senate and the House (meaning Trump won't get impeached), for them to worry about. They'll get to put forward some face-saving amendment, instead.

Otherwise they would probably end up waiting until after the July 4th recess and try to do it before the August recess (and perhaps do a conference version for both chambers during that time). They want to have it passed in both Houses by that August recess though.

I am on my congressman's e-newsletter list and got the 1st one today. He said that he is on both the House Agriculture Committee and Nutrition subcommittee and indicated that they are in the process of working on the next iteration of the Farm Bill (which I believe will be up for FY19 - i.e., around October 2018). That "bill" (sortof a slang term since it will be a 5-year appropriations law), has been targeted by Drumpf. As we know, SNAP is in there as well as the National School Lunch Program and WIC, etc., plus the farm subsidies. So you can bet that SNAP, NSLP, WIC are goners.

Portman is under the gun because of Kasich's Medicaid expansion and opposition to the Medicaid proposals. A local Cleveland, OH TV station indicated that they (Portman and Gov. Kasich) "declined to back it".

You never know, he sure talks a big game.

This guy Heller should be commended for making an early announcement. He could have kept quiet but this gives other dissenters some hope. Also it's a big plus for the Democrats.

If McCain puts his vote where his mouth is, maybe we can beat this thing. In Pennsylvania we've got Senator Toomey who's probably in bed with the Russians. For sure he'll never buck the GOP party leadership.
