Bannon: Trumps strategy is let the warfighters fight the war

Source: The Hill via CNN

Trump has increasingly empowered the Pentagon and military leaders to make tactical military decisions, breaking from the precedent of White House oversight carried out by both Republican and Democratic administrations in the past, CNN reported.

The move, administration officials say, is designed to reverse Obama administration – and, to a lesser extent, George W. Bush administration – practices that weigh down military campaigns and hamper commanders' abilities to make tactical decisions.

But that transfer of power from the White House to the Pentagon has also raised questions about whether Trump will be held to the same level of accountability as the military officials he has empowered.

"It's really important for the President to take responsibility for outcome and have a conversation with the American people that prepares people for both what we're trying to do and the sacrifices that will be required to do it," Kori Schake, George W. Bush's former National Security Council director for defense strategy, told CNN.

This is the REAL Bannon agenda. He wants that apocalyptic war between Christianity and Islam to prove which is stronger. He says it's 'existential,' you know.

So...Russia, the new GOP healthcare monstrosity, gutting the EPA, allowing financial regulators to ignore the Volcker Rule and now this.

What, do you think, our world will look like by November 2018???

But, hey, why do we HAVE nuclear bombs if we're not gonna USE them???

But...but...but...

“I know more about ISIS than the generals do. Believe me. I’ve had a lot of wars of my own. I’m really good at war. ...I know more about offense and defense than (the Defense Dept.) will ever understand, believe me. Believe me. Than they will ever understand. Than they will EVER understand." - Said the man who thinks NATO is obsolete, and the Geneva Convention a hindrance.

If he's so damn smart about war, why is he turning it over to the Pentagon?

And it shows that the military cannot be trusted to carry out a campaign, without taking shortcuts and committing war crimes!

First it was the MOAB in Afghanistan...doesn't anyone wonder why all the chest beating stopped when there were suspicions that the US killed more civilians in the area then it did ISIL!

We know that the US has dropped bombs on targets with civilians, in its assistance to forces trying to take back Mosul and Raqaa, and the use of white phosphorous, again on areas where civilians are known to be located!

This is intentional on Trump's part, this way he cannot be directly blamed for war crimes, he'll claim that the commanders in the field have not been keeping the White House in the loop, intentionally!!!

this makes me more nervous than anything these clowns are doing.

curtis lemay w/o civilian oversight= nukes lobbed at cuba. and then "cooler heads would prevail". thankfully cooler heads prevailed first.
the military wants to fight. it's what they do.

i have a nephew who was career army. he told me there was widespread frustration after viet nam. no war campaigns, no medals, no promotions= stagnating careers.

these guys are hungry to let the fruit salad rain down.

This comment by Bannon shows he and Trump and likely the rest of the assholes in the White House have no understanding of the nature of war. As Clausewitz tells us, war is an extension of politics. Wars are fought to achieve political aims -- access to resources, keep trade routes open, overthrow an enemy . . . but the end result is always political.

Does anyone remember the US invasion of Grenada in 1983? Seems that Cuba, with the agreement of the Grenadan government, had quietly stationed Cuban troops on the island and were building up their military presence. Several Americans were students at a medical school in Grenada.

I don't recall all the details, however, things went to hell and a few dozen American students were holed up in the medical school. We decided to send in the Army, Navy, and Marines to rescue them -- Army Rangers, Special Forces, Navy SEALS, and the 82d Airborne Division led the way.

In the midst of a planning meeting at 18th Airborne Corps HQ, Fort Bragg, NC, a senior Army officer asked the White House and State Department reps "What is our mission?"

The State Dept guy replied: "To overthrow the Grenadan government, remove the Cuban troops, and install a President friendly to the US."

The room went silent. Then, a young smart-ass airborne major piped up from the back of the room: "Do we get to choose the president or do you have someone in mind?"

It was a thing of beauty.

tRump has offended most other countries, except Russia and the Philippines. That in itself showed there was no over-arching foreign policy other than to piss everyone off. To, in effect, hand over foreign policy to the military - and that is what he has done, we will now have competing war theaters.

What will be the driving force of the military's plans? Will it be ISIL, oil prices, Arctic passage, a 3 AM tweet?

Mr. Bannon is a supremely dangerous figure who, like ISIL, wants this all to end in Dabique and who, like Putin, know how to manipulate the pliable insecurities of the guy above him who can cause real trouble, maybe even initiate the hoped-for "final conflict" of religion on earth. The fact Trump follows only one principle, "unabashed self-interest," makes it all the easier. In other words, Steve Bannon is Dick Cheney on steroids.

Only 2018 stands between us and oblivion.
