Philando Castile family reaches $3M settlement in death

Source: Associated Press

Associated Press June 26, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The mother of Philando Castile, a black motorist killed by a Minnesota police officer last year, has reached a nearly $3 million settlement in his death, according to an announcement Monday by her attorneys and the Minneapolis suburb that employed the officer.

The settlement to be paid to Valerie Castile, who is the trustee for her family in the case, will avoid a federal wrongful death lawsuit stemming from Philando Castile's death. The 32-year-old elementary school cafeteria worker was killed by St. Anthony officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop July 6 after Castile told the officer he was armed. Castile had a permit for his gun.

The shooting gained widespread attention after Castile's girlfriend, who was in the car with her then-4-year-old daughter, livestreamed its gruesome aftermath on Facebook.

Yanez, who is Latino, was acquitted of manslaughter and other charges earlier this month. The jury's decision prompted days of protests, including one in St. Paul that shut down Interstate 94 for hours and ended with 18 arrests.

And I think other cities will take notice and start to give cops better training in diversity and de-escalation techniques.

Nothing? Paid leave? A reminder to accidentally turn off the dash cam next time?

We are seeing way too much of this now. Everyone has a camera on their phones these days. We see it all the time. Yet not much is changing in many police departments where they are still very afraid and way too quick to pull the trigger.

"The city intends to offer Officer Yanez a voluntary separation agreement to help him transition to another career other than being a St. Anthony officer. The terms of this agreement will be negotiated in the near future, so details are not available at this time. In the meantime, Officer Yanez will not return to active duty."

A lot of people have lost their jobs without having killed anyone.

I hope there is a loophole for a civil case for other than the mother.

The fact that his girlfriend gets nothing is why legal marriage is important to many couples and one of the biggest reasons why conservatives are militantly against any legal recognition of gay marriage. And they did the same back in the day with interracial marriage.

Even many judges back in the day admit that no one cares if people love each other, the problem is when one of them dies and the other inherits something "they don't deserve".

I hope Castile's daughter gets some money set aside for college tuition or something.
