15% who think they're in the 1% and 20% outright racists - with the first 16% being closet racists or are okay with racism.

(There was a study several years back that said 18% of Americans think they're in the top 1% of income earners)

I can't agree with you more: there are so many that have themselves believing (because they own a large home and a luxury car), that they are part of the elitist, ultra rich.

But, interestingly, they nailed Trump's numbers on election night. They almost always give the GOP candidates a five percent edge no matter what happens. But this time they were accurate. And I don't know if it was just a coincidence (even a broken clock is right twice a day), or they actually got the accurate numbers because they used ROBOTS to do the survey. So that Chris Matthews' mythical 'shy Trump voters' would be too embarrassed to tell a live pollster from Gallup that they supported Trump, but they were willing to punch the right number on their phone, and tell the Rasmussen robot that they supported Trump.

I'm hoping Gallup will start doing more robocall polls to get a handle on this stuff.

Naw, they couldn't be that on target anyway.

Still that poll does have a GOP bias for sure.

Before the election, when people asked me who I thought would win, I'd say 'Clinton, of course. But if it's even CLOSE (55% vs. 45%, as opposed to 70% vs. 30%) it will be an absolute embarrassment and humiliation for the United States.

Well...here we are. FAR BEYOND embarrassed, humiliated, and totally discredited as the world's leading democracy.

American politics has become nothing more than TRIBAL IDENTITY based on superficial markings. It's the only way to explain what's happened. If you live in the country, drive a truck and own a rifle, you're a 'conservative,' you vote Republican, and Donald Trump is your leader, and you support him. The same way everybody from TIKRIT supported Saddam Husein. And anybody who lives in the city, drives a Prius hybrid, and thinks your truck is causing global warming, or that gun sales should be regulated is your ENEMY from the other tribe, and you'll support anything that sticks a finger in THEIR eye. Even if it's not in YOUR interest.

The Democratic Party has shifted somewhat in the direction of tribalism too, but not nearly to the same extent.

The fact that FOUR in TEN Americans think that a childish, immature, mentally deficient CONMAN, who was elected with an assist from Vladimir Putin, uses the Presidency to make himself richer and give jobs to his kids, and wants to take away access to basic health care from 20,000,000 Americans just to give a fat tax cut to a handful of billionaires is DOING A GREAT JOB is an absolute disgrace to the United States.

Put it this way...at 35% approval, Donald Trump is STILL 15% more popular than George W Bush at his lowest point. And compared to Trump, Bush is a master of statesmanship, with the brains of a Rhodes Scholar.

That's about all it was and still is in their mind

and you're right about the tribal mentality.

Many are also a lot like incredibly fanatic sports fans in the mold of English football hooligans and they listen to RW radio berate and demonize the other team - all.day.long. They don't want a fair game - they just want to win at any cost. Cheating is fine and even if caught ... just deny, deny, deny.
