GOP Sen. Ron Johnson Slams Colleagues: We Refuse to Be 'Honest and Courageous' on Health Care

As of Tuesday morning, six GOP Senators oppose the health care proposal ticketed for a vote this week, four more than the party can afford to lose in order for the legislation to pass.
One of those in opposition is Sen. Ron Johnson (WI). He, along with Sen. Ted Cruz (TX), Sen. Mike Lee (UT), and Sen. Rand Paul (KY) are standing against the bill on the right flank. The group believes the legislation doesnt cut costs enough.
And in a Tuesday appearance on Fox News, Johnson slammed many of his colleagues for, in his view, lying to themselves about how much the Senate proposal will actually cost.
We literally are ignoring the fact that Obamacare artificially drove up premiums double, in some cases triple, Johnson said. Now, theres a reason for that. We refuse to do the root cause analysis. We refuse to be honest and, I would say courageous enough to point out that all these things that sound nice have very serious negative unintended consequences called doubling and tripling your premiums.

Yes, he did, it's a little limp, but it's there ... so he's facing reality on some level, just a little

(54,408 posts)The Republicans know it's a loser, and look to me like they are trying to push it, except that that they aren't. They could have just enough of their own vote no, act "so disappointed," and then breathe a sigh of relief that they haven't blown up their chances to retain their Senate majority next year. The last thing they need is a Democratic 50 state strategy of non-stop, non-repeating ads with 100,000 different Americans all explaining why their lives have turned to shit due to the Republican repeal-and-fuck-over bill, 90% of which would be former Republicans saying "I've never voted for a Democrat in my life, but I am urging all of my fellow Republicans to do it now, because this time, it IS a matter of life and death-OURS!"

(1,336 posts)health insurance to auto insurance -- you have an accident and your rates go up. You get sick (or have a pre-existing condition) so your rates go up (way up). Seems to me he's just making these statements so that his numbskull constituents won't think he's just a bad guy after all.....

(90,714 posts)Some people can be swayed by appeals to enlightened self-interest (i.e. Your tax base will improve in the future if you see that all kids get a good public education now). I keep hoping someone can get thru to John McCain by appealing to his love of country.
Some people are basically hopeless until whatever-it-is happens to them personally, like a homophobe having a favorite nephew or their own child come out as gay -- or develop an excruciating, life-threatening, and devastatingly expensive illness when said politician has always voted for letting bake sales pay for it.
But for some of them, I've finally come to the point where I now hope that politicians who only learn by personal experience -- have those experiences. Meanwhile, though, we'll keep using our words.

(4,268 posts)this bill is too generous and those little things (like coverage and pre existing conditions?) will raise costs. "Consequences".
They have no shame.
