Pressure Ramps Up On OCare Repeal Holdouts As A Fifth Senator Bails

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ALICE OLLSTEIN Published JUNE 27, 2017 11:50 AM

Senate leaders’ plan to pass a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act before the July 4 recess has hit a roadblock: a mini-revolt by a cadre of Republicans from both the moderate and far-right wings of the party who announced Monday they would not vote to advance the bill as it’s currently written.

On Tuesday morning, a fifth senator joined the opposition: Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). Lee had previously excoriated the bill as a “caricature of a Republican health care bill,” noting that it leaves in place many of Obamacare’s regulations and prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy as well as payments to insurance companies. A spokesperson for Lee told TPM: “We are still working with leadership to change base bill.”

The opposition from Lee, Susan Collins (R-ME), Rand Paul (R-KY), Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Dean Heller (R-NV) effectively halts the bill’s progress, and with several other Republicans voicing doubts and concerns, the Senate’s multi-month effort to roll back Obamacare appears to be in jeopardy if changes are not made.

In response, GOP leaders and their allies are pulling out all the stops by inviting some dissenters to dine at the White House, running attack ads against others, and issuing dire warnings that if the bill fails, the party will lose leverage on every other issue it hopes to make progress on in the years to come. But several Republican lawmakers continue to wobble despite those carrots and sticks.

to make him vote yes. He has NEVER stated he would not vote for it. His statement is that he wants to make it "better." He's meeting personally with Trump today.

I wouldn't at all count on ANY of the objectionists whose objections are that it's not as cruel as it should be. They are followers, looking to get something, and will fall in line, rather than be the lone holdout.

It's the ones who are against it because it's cruel who will probably not change their votes. There are only two of those, so far. Collins & Heller. The bill can be passed without them, and they know it. So they have no fear.

If they make the bill worse to please Paul, I wonder if they'll lose Murkowski.

They are, after all, repubs and this is a game to them. A game they love and play again and again.

we are seeing the most corupt Political Party since the 1880's when Senator Clark passed out money on the Senate Floor. It is all about the free-be's coming from the Koch's and Mercer's.

He's the Vice President and a moron. If Trump doesn't have the juice to twist arms then Mike Pence certainly doesn't.

dropping like flies in the red state south is the only thing that will convince these republican maggots to provide its citizens good healthcare. When illness starts killing off the grandkids then something will be done.

These people sold their souls a long time ago and would sacrifice even their own kin to save their seat. They are a sad bunch of power hungry rats that care for no one but themselves and kissing up to the wealthy donors they serve.

They have truly sold their souls. Who knows what illegal and unethical things would be revealed if they made their masters angry.
