After Senate Republican leaders abruptly decided Tuesday to delay a vote on a bill to repeal and replace Obamacare until after the July 4 recess, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) said that she has a hard time seeing what tweaks to the legislation would prompt her to back the bill.
I will say that I have so many fundamental problems with the bill that have been confirmed by the CBO report that its difficult for me to see how any tinkering is going to satisfy my fundamental and deep concerns about the impact of the bill, Collins told reporters.
Collins said that she would still attend a meeting of the Senate Republican caucus with President Donald Trump at the White House later Tuesday afternoon, despite her doubts that GOP leaders could persuade her to back the bill.
The senator announced Monday night that she could not support the bill as written. Opposition to the bill from Collins and several other senators cast doubt on the notion that Republicans had enough support to pass the bill this week.

Oh, yeah... I forgot about the tax cuts.
Never mind.

(2,895 posts)But if their only real goals are to gut Medicaid, cripple Planned Parenthood and slash taxes for the wealthy, I guess that won't fly. (And the billionaires have threatened to withhold their bribes if they don't get their tax cuts and repealed ObamaCare.)

I'd really like a prominate Dem to seize this moment and reach out to her since she has publicly stated that she'd like to see the ACA improved instead of scrapping it. A partnership right now could get some traction in the eyes of the public.

That seems to be the biggest stumbling block viewing the Republican behavior the last eight years.
I wouldn't mind giving Trump a win so long as we can fix this to the benefit of all Americans.

(17,863 posts)This is your opportunity to step up. Why don't you work with the Democrats to come up with a bill that makes sense? Maybe a few of your "moderate" brethren might want to come along for the ride.
There are ways to craft Medicaid where it is not burdensome, but would have incentives to guide the behaviors that Republicans seem to care about.

Frankly, I do not think Senate Republicans want a repeal/replace to pass. They don't want to own it.

He said that, for instance, Susan Collins is worried about cutbacks in Medicaid and would need $200 Million Dollars to fund that, so McConnell could use $200M of the extra money to send her way, and solve that problem.
First...who knew there was "extra money"?
Second, if he thinks those who are worried about Medicaid recipients can be bought off by funding Medicaid for one year, he misses the point. She's making a judgment call on the welfare of people, both now and into the future. Funding it for one year isn't useful. AND the provisions for Medicaid get worse as time goes on.
Now, you could buy off Rand Paul. He's concerned about the money. For people concerned about the money, you can buy them off by giving them....money. The bill cuts more and more as time goes on, so a flush of money now might hold Rand Paul for now, while he waits for the stricter provisions to kick in.
I wonder what this "extra money" is that the pundit was referring to? Extra money in healthcare? Or in the budget?
