Michael Nyqvist, 'Dragon Tattoo' Star, Dies at 56

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Michael Nyqvist, who starred as Mikael Blomkvist in the original Swedish The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo movie thrillers with Noomi Rapace, died Tuesday after battling lung cancer, his family said. He was 56.

"Michael's joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him," a family statement read.

Nyqvist also appeared in John Wick, toplined by Keanu Reeves, and as the villain nuclear scientist in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol opposite Tom Cruise.

The role of Mikael Blomqvist in the American big-screen adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, based on Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, was played by Daniel Craig.

I loved him in the Dragon Tattoo movies. He was handsome in a rugged, roughed up, normal way (not like movie star handsome). He died so young! Only 56? Geez.

had a busy career, I'm glad to see! - so many actors languish (starving artist - not fun) in obscurity, eh...

Here's his IMDb link - he did lots of different things (i.e., was a ballet dance for a year, how cool!)

RIP, and safe travels, sir.

Wallender: Mastermind Interestingly, one of the actors who played a Detective under Wallender was Ola Rapace, Noomi Rapace's former husband.

I adore the Swedish film version of Steig Larsson's Millenium trilogy, mostly because of Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. I have watched them many times, likewise read the books.

Nyqvist was perfectly cast as Blomkvist. He was tough but a caring person. He quickly learned that Lisbeth was a very special person, as did any observant person who she touched in the narrative.

Here's a few scenes:

The films are fucking wonderful. Watch them subtitled. Only the original Swedish audio works well.

Sad to see him go so soon.

On edit: BTW, contrary to the lyrics in the above video, Lisbeth was neither innocent nor sweet.

Witness, a scene from "The Girl Who Played with Fire", Lisbeth at her best. She doesn't take shit from anybody.
