Source: CBS
A U.S. Army soldier on active-duty in Hawaii has been charged with providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the FBI said.
FBI officials identified the soldier to CBS News as 34-year-old Ikaika Erik Kang. According to the FBI, Kang allegedly attempted to provide military documents, and training, to ISIS.
His service record indicates he was deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 and Iraq in 2011 and was highly decorated, CBS News' Paula Reid reports.
Kang was arrested on Saturday and is expected to appear in court on Monday afternoon. The FBI said Kang was the subject of a year-long, joint investigation by the FBI and the U.S. Army.

FBI: US soldier arrested after pledging loyalty to IS group
HONOLULU (AP) An active-duty U.S. soldier has been arrested on terrorism charges that accuse him of pleading allegiance to the Islamic State group and saying he wanted to kill a bunch of people.
The FBI took Sgt. 1st Class Ikaika Kang into custody over the weekend in a Honolulu suburb after a yearlong investigation involving multiple undercover officers and confidential informants. The 34-year-old from Hawaii made an initial appearance Monday in federal court.
Kangs court-appointed defense attorney, Birney Bervar, said it appears his client may suffer from service-related mental health issues of which the government was aware but neglected to treat. Bervar declined to elaborate.

A 26-page affidavit from FBI agent Jimmy Chen filed in court Monday detailed how Kang thought he was dealing with people working for Islamic State but who were actually undercover agents.
Paul Delacourt, the FBI agent in charge of the Hawaii bureau, told reporters the FBI believed Kang was a lone actor and was not affiliated with anyone who poses a threat......................

He's helping ISIL from Hawaii? I think not.

The stories I've read so far seem to indicate he was more of a disgruntled soldier than anything...

(32,975 posts)seems to be treason. Is that, for active duty military, an executable offense?
I have no knowledge of military law. From my porch chair, it looks like his JAG lawyer has a hard way to go.
