Hiroshima to rate N-disarmament efforts

The Hiroshima prefectural government is set to launch a project to rate countries' nuclear disarmament efforts as an initiative for the elimination of nuclear weapons, officials said Monday.
The prefecture will hold its first meeting of experts to draw up standards for the ratings Thursday, ahead of the 67th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, the officials said.
Similar projects have been taken up in the past by private-sector groups, but such a move is rare for a municipality. The prefecture appropriated 5 million yen for the project in fiscal 2012, they said.
The Hiroshima government plans to rate the United States, Russia, France, Britain and China. It also plans to rate nonsignatory countries to the U.N. Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty that have either declared themselves to have nuclear weapons or are suspected of having them, such as India, Pakistan, Israel, North Korea and Iran.
