Martin Landau, Oscar Winner for 'Ed Wood,' Dies at 89
Source: Hollywood Reporter
Martin Landau, the all-purpose actor who showcased his versatility as a master of disguise on the Mission: Impossible TV series and as a broken-down Bela Lugosi in his Oscar-winning performance in Ed Wood, has died. He was 89.
Landau, who shot to fame by playing a homosexual henchman in Alfred Hitchcocks 1959 classic North by Northwest, died Saturday of "unexpected complications" after a brief stay at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, his rep confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
After he quit CBS Mission: Impossible after three seasons in 1969 because of a contract dispute, Landaus career was on the rocks until he was picked by Francis Ford Coppola to play Abe Karatz, the business partner of visionary automaker Preston Tucker (Jeff Bridges), in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988).
Landau received a best supporting actor nomination for that performance, then backed it up the following year with another nom for starring as Judah Rosenthal, an ophthalmologist who has his mistress (Angelica Huston) killed, in Woody Allens Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989).

(6,918 posts)"Ed Wood" deserved it's Best Picture nomination. Landau's performance in a Support role is one of the best performances ever in that category, too. But it's nothing like the background actors in "Lovely, Still". LOL

(99,660 posts)I had lost this. Taken at least 2 cell phones ago. I found it on David Macklin's site. He passed away this year too. Life long Hollywood liberal actor. Was at the party when Bobby was assassinated.

(99,660 posts)Marta and I have 100's of in person Hollywood star photos. We know to talk about good little remembered performances. I did my homework before going to the location in case I got close.
I did by accident.
With Ellen I said something about her own series and some classic TV. Then I half sang "the last time I felt like this, I was falling in love." A huge smile from her and she talked about working with Alan Alda on "Same Time Next Year."
Martin had talked with several people. Most mentioned Mission Impossible, Ed Wood, The Majestic, and a few other well known roles.
I told him how Marta has an 8x10 glossy from "Cleopatra" and his face lit up and he clearly enjoyed hearing about it
I mentioned him as a gunfighter in the Twilight Zone episode Mr. Denton on Doomsday.
Then I mentioned Marta's love of "The Wild Wild West.
Marta's 80's Twilight Zone pages: http://www.steveandmarta.com/ntz1.htm
I finished out with his being in an 80's episode of the twilight Zone and asked how he liked working with Alan Brennert? I got a wow how do you remember that. I mentioned Marta is on the credits for the 80's TZ release and gets along well with Alan.
There were 3-5 extras that didn't get paid, but had a great moment or two with two wonderful stars.

(2,655 posts)The story line about Alda's character (which includes mischief generated by Woody Allen's character) serves as comic relief from the intense main story line about the two opposite-natured brothers portrayed by Martin Landau and Jerry Orbach.

RIP Mr. Landau. He and Barbara Bain made the first three years of Mission:Impossible. Too bad they both left the show due to the contract issues. Wasn't the same show without them.
